My tc33d is clock time an hour is an hour and my tc 55d is an hour of 1840 is an hour but the pto is 2500 so they tried to find a happy medium to be more like an average hour which i guess is the way it should be and my old International is by pto speed so i have 3 tractors with 3 different types and you will have to look at the owners manual to see which you have for sure and if its clock hours then you rack them up pretty fast when idling around and stuff so it seems like they go by quick however my tc55 when haying goes by really quick since faster then an hour so depends what your doing. wow thats a long run on sentence.

Here's what's in the TC31DA\TC34DA manual:

Proof Meter
Records the hours and portions of hours that your tractor has been operated regardless of engine RPM. Use the proof meter as a guide to determine hourly service and maintenance intervals.

Is this for me?

If so, a electronic tach is basically a clock, if the key is on, it is clicking on hours, 1 hour in 1 hour.

Yikes.. what a horrible system for determining system usage and maintenance.

Taht means that you can turn your ignition on for 100 hrs and then it needs an oil change.

Or you can run the tractor at idle for 100 hours driving in a parder and it needs an oil change.. or runt he tractro at redline for 100 hours.. and it still needs that oil change.. problem? a whole lot more wear and work has happened in these examples as you progress .. etc.

personally.. I like pt0/tach hours.. thus the harder i work my tractor.. the quicker it gets serviced without respect to real time..

Electric hour meters are good for rental houses..

Methinks they are also cheaper to make than proofmeters.. thus a beancounter somewhere decided they were a good idea...

Glad my tractors have tach hour meters..

Is it possible to convert to tach?

Probably. Just depends on how much effort you want to go to.

Some tachs have a cable that goes to the engine.

Some tachs use light to measure engine speed.

I have also seen a tach that counts faster as vibration increases. But I have never been able to find it since.

Lotsa choices.. You can get the fuel injection vibration pickup type that Grrr mentioned.. or see if you have an aux tach drive on some part of the machine.. Sometimes the alternator is aprt of the pickup / drive.. etc..

You guys have too much time on your hands. How many of you change your car or truck's engine oil at a specific mileage interval regardless of driving style? What makes you think a tractor that has idled around at low RPM's and low operating temps doesn't need an oil change as bad or in reality worse than one that has had the snot run out of it for 100 hours? Change your oil at the recommended interval and be happy.
