Re: How about Lance "YouDaMan" Armstrong?

So Sticky Man/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif,
Are you now spleenless, or did you get to keep it? Your spleen that is. And do you still have a motorcycle?
Seems most people I've met who have sold their spleen (or other valuable body parts) with a motorcycle, have then sold the bike?
Harley Riders being the exception.
Me, I've never been brave enough to actually get a motorcycle, despite torturing my parents with the threat that I would all through my teens.
Worst thing I actually sold biking was a bit o skin and the shirt and bib I was wearing. (amazing how far you can slide down the road at 35mph, isn't it!) Didn't even hurt till I got in the shower, although riding the 10miles home with my bum hanging out was a bit embar-ass-ing /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif.

Re: How about Lance "YouDaMan" Armstrong?

Pete - Yeah, but everybody knew that was just a means of emphasizing how good Mr. Armstrong is.

Now, I really am speechless, with so many hard core mashers around. Not to worry - I'll get over it.

Speaking of getting over it: Has anybody but me given up on the road bike because of the difficulty in sharing the road with jerks on 4 wheels? When I was a teenager, I used to carry a piece of heater hose with a bolt screwed into the end of it - when somebody tried to run me off the road, I whacked the side of the car (or, more often, pickup) first, then took out a side glass if that didn't adjust their attitude sufficiently (only had to resort to that twice - you can get away with that stuff when you're a minor). But, once I got married, and realized I wasn't immortal, I found I just didn't have the nerve to ride the back roads around here anymore. I just can't do it. I bought a mountain bike, but I really haven't been able to get into that like I did road biking.

Re: How about Lance \"YouDaMan\" Armstrong?

Mark, maybe I'm just lucky but I have little or no problem with four wheel traffic up here. Most of our backroads are plenty wide with light traffic. When I do need to travel on a busier road the traffic generally gives me plenty of room. Last night was our training ride/race and we tend to be pretty obnoxious, taking the entire road at times. When a car is noted, we pull into one lane and give way. Most of the locals are used to seeing us out and are pretty tolerant. Had to blast by a full sized Deere pulling a load of peppermint last night. What a great smell! I don't even have troubles riding through the 'hood on my way to and from work (kind of a rough part of town).

My experiences a few years back in the Nashville area were altogether different. Drivers were not friendly to cyclists at all. Maybe it's different now, but back then I'd have probably spent more time on the trails then the roads ahd I moved there.

BTW, Lance hits the road in the time trial in a few minutes. He should be well rested for this stage /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: How about Lance "YouDaMan" Armstrong?

This brings up an interesting subject around here. Where we live is right by the river and cyclists love to ride it, up and down hills, and winding. The problem is they are constantly backing up traffic. There have been numerous wrecks around here and fights. How logical is it for bikes to be riding on busy roads? If you are a car and on the road you can't go less than 10 miles under the stated speed, which is 65 on this road. Just would like to hear how you guys that ride bikes feel about it. It is a pretty big annoyance when you're headed to work and you have to wait 10 minutes to get by a bunch of bikes. I understand but cooler heads don't always prevail. BTW like I mentioned this is a hilly and winding road so not very many places to pass safely, even a bicycle. Now don't jump all over me on this I'm just asking how you guys feel about it from the other side.

Re: How about Lance \"YouDaMan\" Armstrong?

I would not ride on a road with a 65mph limit unless I absolutely had to. In that case I would be very cautious of the cars. It sounds like a nice road, but between the speeds and the traffic it's just no place for a bicycle. My cycling opinion /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: How about Lance \"YouDaMan\" Armstrong?

Richard, I guess we're lucky. We seldom have to contend with bicycles on the roads around here, but about once a year, some cycling group or club or something has some kind of get together and we'll have hundreds of them spread out over 10 to 20 miles all day, and they make farm tractors on these farm-to-market roads (55 mph speed limit) look like speed demons. A lot of them seem to deliberately try to prevent cars from passing them, and I'm actually surprised I've never heard of any of them getting killed. I think the purpose of the get together is to round up 500 of the dumbest bike riders in the state in one place./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Are you now spleenless, or did you get to keep it? Your spleen that is.

I asked the doctor (the morning after) if he could "repair" a ruptured spleen. He replied, "It's kind of like trying to sew together an egg yolk." /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif So I am spleenless. Since found out that that is not 100% correct. Had an ultrasound of my abdomen a couple of years ago, and found out I have some sort of vestigal spleen (whatever the heck that is).

And do you still have a motorcycle?

Actually kept the bikes a couple of years before we decided that the risk outweighed the reward. Have been motorcycle-less for about 18 years now...

Re: How about Lance \"YouDaMan\" Armstrong?

I actually do both.

I ride regularly (Mon. Wed. Fri) at work (instead of lunch). On weekends, I do the bike trails up around the house.

The roads around where I work are pretty decent for road riding; they either have bike lanes or have sparse traffic through neighborhoods. Up where I live, there is no bike lane or shoulder, and I refuse to share the road with (4w) crazys that don't know how to drive mountain roads.

Re: How about Lance "YouDaMan" Armstrong?

Bird,
Same thing here. The guys and gals will not get to the side so that you can pass. They will stay right in the middle of the road. Then if you do pass and they think you are too close they start yelling obscenities and giving you the finger. I know you guys aren't like that and alot of them are good about it and get way over but the majority don't. It's really bad here. The sheriff patrols that road regularly and I see him with bikes and cars pulled over all the time.
