I was originally looking at John Deere. Then Kubota. Is New Holland a viable alternative in terms of quality, reliability value...?

Welcome to TBN :D! Many people consider it to be one of the "Big Three". I have had no problems with mine other than diesel fuel problems (which a lot of members regardless of tractor make had this winter with ULSD ). I suggest you provide us with more information as to your location, property, intended uses, etc. and the membership of TBN will provide you with probably more information and opinions than you care to receive as well as help you spend a lot of your money . I have approx 3-4 acres of field with a fairly gentle slope. I want to plant on this. It is currently overrun with high grass/weeds except for a patch that has a small garden, chicken coop and two apple trees. Around this field is a gravel road which is partially overrun with weeds. I'd like to scrape it and keep it clean and useful. One of my kids likes to use it as a track for running/exercise and I like that idea.

There is also another 3-4 acres of landscaped property that is about half made up of fairly steep grade. I'd like to terrace some of this and there is a small creek that I'd like to digout, line and landscape. There are also a couple of areas that I'd like to flatten for a playground for the kids and what is currently a long patch of lawn but is on a grade so I was thinking to flatten this in two levels moving dirt from the high part to the lower and with a retaining wall in between.

I'd also like to plant some trees in various areas of the property. So I'm thinking a small/compact tractor with loader, backhoe, tiller, disc, scraper, posthole digger. I may have to wait on some of those attachments for financial reasons but I think that is what I need to accomplish what I want to do.

What size you looking for? I just got mine a month or so ago and really like it but I would probably say that if I got Green or Orange too.

Well you can do all the comparisons and decide for yourself. NH is one of the big 3 for sure and i think the right tractor for you is the TC45DA hydrostatic drive with backhoe and loader. Check that one out. I have a 33 and going to have a 55 but for a one tractor person the 45 is the answer i believe.

Xreliable,

I purchased my first tractor in 2004. You will not go wrong with any of the top tractor brands. I based my decision on the dealer. My first tractor was a New Holland TC 30 with a FEL. If you want a basic tractor without all the creature comforts then a TC 30 is a great tractor for the money. I sold the TC 30 because I tripled my property size in 2006. I now have a New Holland TC 40. I have enjoyed both my tractors and I have no intention of changing brands.

Shop around and get several quotes and come back to this site to see what king of deal you are getting. Also, take time to drive several brands and then make your decision.

Welcome to TBN! :D

I have a new TC40DA and absolutely love it! Some of my neighbors also have Blue, Green and Orange TLBs and we enjoy showing off our steeds to each other. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of those three. Your decision may be more influenced by dealership support and distance rather than color. I wouldn't trade my dealer for the world. He's been extremely realiable, honest, and prompt; not to mention only a couple miles down the road. We also have a green dealer down the road and another orange one a little further away. Again, I wouldn't trade my dealer for either of the other two.

I agree... I consider it one of the big 3 and legacy 9ford ).. etc. I own plenty of fords.. and have had a couple NH's. I love em better than any other flavor for the time being at least.

I've owned all three, and they're all great machines. I purchased a NH TC45D a few months ago simply because I liked a few of the options not available (or very costly) on other brands. Items such as super steer, swivel seat, ss qa bucket, and the location of the loader controls made the difference for me. Additionally, the NH seems a little more "substantial" than the Kubota GL that I operated at a neighbor's farm.

My Kubota was a great machine, just wasn't big enough for our new property, so I sold her. JD makes awesome tractor too, just out of my price range in the region I live...4-5K more...

Others have mentioned the dealer, and if it comes down to it, go w/ the best...service will be important no matter the brand.

Best of luck.
