HI everyone,

I am close to buying a 2410 with MMM, loader and backhoe.

I am worried about the MMM. I would rather have a suspended one like on the BX22.

Why a design where the heavy mower runs on the ground with littel wheels and rollers? My grass area [actually short weeds mostly that looks like grass] is about an acre, with a fence across the middle and a pond and some trees. Not flat, kind of wavy, requiring a fair amount of turns when cutting and there are some transitons between slopes and flat areas where my MTD garden tractor may scalp the surface.

There are also some depressions in the grassy area left by a high lift and where a trench settled...

I would also like to run the Kubota over some trails I made on two acres of hillside back behind the pond, which I am able to maintain with the MTD and its suspended deck.

I really want the 2410 rather than the BX22. But I am worried that the lack of a suspended mower may hinder my using it in the woods on the trails where things are not smooth at all, but still very doable with the MTD right now.

How rugged is the RCK60-24B mower? I have read a lot of the archives but still don't really know...seems like a ground contact mower, on ground that is not perfectly smooth is all disadvantage and little or no advantage.

Shame that a dumb thing like the mower could prevent me from buying the tractor that would probably work best for me all around.

I would say that overall 50% of the tractor hours may be spent mowing...but then, I never had a tractor with loader and backhoe...maybe 25% will be mowing...10%...??? who knows?

Your input would be highly appreciated. I am turning myself upside down and inside out over this question! Don't want to spend this kind of money for something I will not be happy with.

I don't want the rear finish mower, by the way, due to the amount of turning I need to do, and so on...

Confused...in Pittsburgh....Bill Macher

Bill,
the 60"mmm on the 2410 is great! it did a much better job than the suspended deck on my old JD. have you noticed that most professionals use ground contact mowers? there will be much less sclaping becuase the mower is riding over the terrain rather than floating over it and hitting the high spots.

i dont think you would have any trouble with this deck. it is built quit strong and takes a beating....i should know i let my father use it.

have you thought about using a RFM? they are easier to take off and on than the MMM. if you are going to be using the fel and bh alot you might look into it.

Bill, I see you're from the 'burgh. Where'd you purchase your unit? On my 2910 I use a Landpride RFM and it does a great job. Of course north of Pittsburgh it hasn't rained in 6 weeks and I haven't had to cut in over three!

The benefit of a suspended mower deck are most apparent on a beatiful, lush lawn where youdon't want wheel contact lines. It sounds like your lawn is like mine, a collection of closely mown weeds! The 2410 is extremely rugged, weighing about a hundred pounds more than the BX deck. I'm sure Trescrow will answer this post, he has experience with both machines.

Bill,

I have used the Kubota MMM on a B7500 for about two years now. It sounds like my property is much like yours, with a pond, osmetimes uneven ground etc.

The only problem that I have had with the MMM is when I am trying to mow in wet, marshy areas. When doing so, the MMM tends to leave some tracks. However, when the ground is dry, I have no problems or complaints. I really think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Well, since you invited me. The 2410's MMM weighs more becasue of all the wheels and structure to support them not needed on the superior BX MMM. While I am now at least somewhat pleased with my 2410 and it's belly mower it in no way is comparable to the BX unit. It cuts better, works much better on rough ground, is much easier to remove and install.
To the original question, go ahead and get the 2410 I suppose but get a brush hog--rotary cutter for your trails. I cannot figure why a guy would want to use a 2,000 dollar MMM to brush hog with and--YOU WILL TEAR IT UP doing so--- when you can get a rotary cutter for 500 dollars. Some people will go to any EXPENSE to SAVE a dollar. J

Macher,

You might notice that Trescrows tells it like it is. Please don't be offended by his self-professed lack of tact. Many of us enjoy his particular style. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

As to the mower question, I haven't a clue. You might consider asking your dealer to demo each tractor on some grass by the dealership and see what you like and don't like. I suspect that either would do a great job.

As for a rotary cutter, I bought a used one for my 2910 a couple of months ago after getting tired of tearing up the deck on my Huskee. Wasn't too expensive, and wow what a difference! If you have brush or limbs on your trails, it would be a handy tool to have.

I looked at the BX and the 2410 when I bought my tractor. The BX was really a little too small for the landscaping I planned to do, and the 2410 was so close to the 2910 in price, I went ahead and upsized. It's amazing how capable these machines are.

I frequently use my MMM suspended by the 3ph on my B1700 when cutting bumpy terrain. Works great either way, rolling on the ground or when held suspended. There is no indication from the deck that running suspended bothers it or the driveshaft.

I owned a B2410 with mid-mount mower for about a year. The 60" midmount was an exceptional mower & cut 8"-10" field like a carpet. I traded for a John Deere 4310 & 72" rear finish Landpride. Again the Kubota mid-mount was great!

Here's my 10 cents. I was making the same decision back in March. I went with the 2410. My grass is not the stuff you'd find on a golf course, but the grass/weed combo. For my purposes, the MMM is just fine. It will leave lines, I suppose moreso on new grass, but not a big deal to me. I cut it all the way up & don't think twice about it. The mower so far has been very tough. It sliced through a cantalope size rock several times and did bend the deck a little, but it's fixed.

If I were to do it again, I would consider the 2710 or 2910. While the deck isn't difficult to take on & off, it does take me 15 minutes or so & it is pretty heavy in my opinion. I have yet to take it off w/o first lifting it with the FEL. I'm not sure if it would even clear the front wheels w/o lifting them. That's where I think the additional wheelbase on the 2710/2910 might be beneficial.

Also, based on the 15 minutes I spend removing it, I also would reconsider the RFM if I were to do it again. The easy on/off might make it well worth it.

Anyway, that's my thoughts.
