How can you tell if your FEL is up to par?

I have an LA682 which has a lift weight of 1499 lbs. What I do is raise the bucket to a height of 18 inches, then have my mother- in-law sit in it ( this takes a little coaxing and a bowl of ice cream since I installed the toothbar ) if I can raise it to 24" I know I'm all set.

You are BAD!

Oh man, that Mother-in-law thing is too funny! :D

I agree that root balls are very heavy, plus, sounds like you may have one or two offending roots left attached. Push the ball back n forth to try to determine what roots still need to be cut. Chock the rootball with some lumber, for safety sake, and if you can get power to the area, grab a handy-dandy sawzall and finish off those roots. I saw a guy cut the last root on a large rootball and it proceeded to darn-near want to crush his legs when it wobbled over his direction. That's why you gotta chock it, or chain it in place.

Once you know you don't have any roots attached try again. The Chain-idea is a real good one, attached to your drawbar you won't be anymore capable of moving/ramping/sliding real big weight. Once out of the hole, if it's just too heavy, you can always use the FEL to roll it.

Lastly, if/when you get to the point you can lift it with the FEL, be very, very careful, since you know you have a tiger-by-the-tail. Use plenty of Rear ballast.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the input guys, you all are great.. I may have to get the MIL over the house to help me load test it LOL but I dont think the wife will go for that method though...
I will get a pressure guage to see what line pressure I have before I call the dealer. I could have very well been over the weight limit of the loader due to all the dirt still attached to the roots. Sliding it out was not an option due to all the blasted mud the area is a sloppy mess, the tractor was spinning while moving to each spot to dig, the rain has been incredible down here this summer.
No hydraulic leaks, level is good in the sight glass, never heard the engine load up but I could here the bypass relief, the rear end never got light either, what really got my goat was not being able to pull a little chain link fence post out of the soft soil that may have at most 1/2 bacg of concrete on it.. I could pull it up by rolling the bucket..

No engine load change, and apparent wimpy performance... I agree with Rob, a pressure gauge "T"d into the line between pump and FEL valve will tell the tale. A little bit of math applied and you can also use it as an indication of the ammount of weight you are lifting:)
