If you are trying to cut off some metal attached to some other metal, you have to realize that a plasma torch is anywhere from 5/8 in wide at the tip to the widest part of the torch housing, about 2 in, and you can not cut flush with the torch lying on it's side. You will always leave some protrusion. You can gouge and scarf somewhat, but will never cut flush.
I used a plasma cutter to cut all the aluminum shelving out of a delivery truck, and every piece had a little ridge left after cutting. I was using the drag cup on my torch.
