How could Artificial Intelligence become dangerous?

AI cannot lay brick or block, frame stud walls, run wire through conduit, pour concrete, do plumbing, roofing, lay tile, install drywall, or run chainsaws. It cannot in a substantial way displace most of the building trades in any way I see yet. I do not see it being a big loss of labor in ship building, power plant construction, road construction, or building constructionetc.

The trades are mostly safe from AI. It’s the paper pushers, clerical workers, low-middle management that are in danger. Much of this also depends on whether you include robotics as part of AI. I am not.

Add to that the much lower birth rates in the USA, and it’s not the catastrophe everyone is making it out to be.
Then add to that the number of energy jobs that will need to be created to supply the electrical power needed. We may be building dozens of nuclear power plants in the next 5-10 years.

IMO, AI will help re-direct the yutes into high paying trades.

I was working in tech support at Gateway during Y2K. It was mostly a nothing-burger. We had staffed up and it was actually pretty slow.

I'm surprised y'all didn't just upgrade operating systems.
Operating systems? hahahhahaa

The 286's would boot up from a 5.25 floppy and run an emulator for a VT220. It was ridiculous.

....
To me, the hard distinction is the program having code, and authorization, instructing it to change it’s own code.

......
Already been done.

That's where all the buzz around sandboxing came about.

The debate about self-awareness and exactly what that means as far as control, continues.

3-D printing, complete builds from the ground up. An example of pre-programmed robotics building stuff.

AI is pushing robotics to another level. They work hand in hand.

AI may push humans to another level too, or not. Remains to be seen.

I was going to mention Asimov but you beat me to it.
And I just realized that I spelled Isaac wrong. TBN obviously needs some sort of AI helper to fix that for me. 🤪

US population 2012 to 2024 grew over 7%, so you can forecast it doubling every 10 years at that rate.
yes it's down from 9%, but it's still massive exponential growth in the US
So what happens when AI automation is put in everywhere?
What happens to the population that no longer works?

I know this kind of leap has happened before from pre to post industrial.
From manual devices to computers.

From manual labor to build cars to full robot automation.

I don't know of any plumbers, electricians, HVAC or others that have left the country recently, unless they were going on vacation.

Yeah, but the people that can do those jobs are being locked up or booted out of the country now.
Woof woof,
Thats nonsense Politics.
I owned a successful construction company for 25 years. All employees and subcontractors were legal citizens.

And while I acknowledge that some construction workers are illegal, if they are deported (as they should be- it’s illegal to come into the country by coming across the border) construction laborer wages will rise to levels where they once again will be a great paying job.

As of now, laborer wages are a race to the bottom. That is caused by illegal, cheap labor.

And you know that.
