WOW !! I think I would tell him to keep them and then go find a new dealer !!! If he is willing to rob you like that then I don't see any moral reason why you could not tell him to keep them, even though you asked him to make them for you.

I'm not big on shafting anyone, but, It is better to be the shafter then the shaftee !!!

I'm a dealer, but not a tractor dealer. The first thing I'd recommend when presented with a bill that seems out of line is to question it. Mistakes are made. If that didn't result in satisfaction from the management, I'd find another dealer. A reasonable profit is to be expected. Gouging is unforgiveable.

I had 2 - 1/2" X 3 ft hoses made by the local hydraulic shop with swivel fittings for my FEL, cost $72 for both, and I thought that was a bit high!

jpm -

I am allowing this to "bug" me. Something just doesn't add up here, and I have a low tolerance for such things.

I would like nothing better than for you to simply return the hoses to him and not pay the "bill".

A few questions. What is his stated return policy? Have you installed the hoses yet? What discussions have you had with him regarding the price he has charged you for the hoses? Have you told him how much (or how little) you could have had the same hoses made for elsewhere?

In short, what gives here? Inquiring minds would really like to know.

Thanks, John D.

I have to agree with Bird on this it sounds like a billing error was made. I can't imagine someone charging so much over the normal price and think the customer won't complain. But I guess you had already checked with the dealer to make sure of the accuracy of your invoice before making this post.

Do you have an account with this dealer and picked up the hoses without seeing the bill? If I had 2 hoses made and he told me in person $300.00. i would start laughing and tell him to try again. If he told Me the same price again I would walk out without the hoses and not feel guilty.

I do have a account with the dealer so its normal to get a bill later on . I posted this because i wondered if "retail" was that out of line.
I didn't want to make a big deal until i was shore the price was out of line and to cool off a little. It's always better to argue over a bill
when you are calm. Monday i will give him a call and ask @#@ /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sounds like this dealer may be kin to BIG OIL ! His family may own Shell ! LOL I would go to the dealer and see if a mistake was made in the billing process as this price sounds way too high. If he tells you this was the correct price, I would ask for a refund and go elsewhere for any future purchase's.

Good luck,
Curt

Mornin jpm,
OUCH, thats crazy /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Just one example I want to give you and I will go away. On my MF 1040 I have a MF 232 loader. The previous owner was a landscaper and he mostly used the loader to load mulch on customers vehicles. There was a spot on the front of the loader were the mulch accumulated and after I had the tractor a few months that one of those hydraulic lines rotted out from the mulch and moisture. I went over to Salem Farm Supply on rt 22 in Salem, Ny and they made up a replacement line 5ft long and I also bought 5 gals of hydraulic fluid. Total bill $40. You might think about using them, there just over the Vt/Ny border. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'm just sitting here wondering why, if JPM's family owns NAPA stores, he didn't just have them made up in one of the stores in the first place. Or did I read something wrong or miss a detail or two in among all the stories of disbelief?

Yeah, I don't quite get it either, but now that I think about it, from time to time I've had one place do something for me, thinking "Well, I'm here, and how much more can it possibly cost than place B", only to experience something very similar. We're all living and learning ... speaking of which, it sounds like that dealer has learned how not to be shy when handing out prices! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

DaTeacha,
Hmmm, interesting observation...

Hey jpm, what kind of fittings were on those hoses he made? Are they 1/2"NPT males? Or are they hydraulic quick disconnects? Were the fittings included in the $10.98 per foot or not?

Either way, at $10.98/ft that's $132 for the hoses (still way too much IMO) and should have included the NPT males. But if they were QD's, I know they are about $35 to $45 each, making your $300. If not, since you have an account with him maybe there was something else included in that $300 that you forgot about? OR, he ripped you off...

Rob, I believe they were Weatherhead 1/2" JIC fittings, in 14-carat gold, with platinum, diamond-encrusted swivels. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mornin Teach,
Not all NAPA stores make up hoses. There is one down the bottom of the hill from me and they send that type of work out. I dont know the specifics in jpm"s case but maybe his store doesnt offer that service /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif That would be a guess on my part.

They don't? Living in farm country, I guess I never thought about that. Ours has a machine shop in the back, too, just in case you want to mill a few thousandths off your heads or something. Of course, we also have an Amish machine shop, which I thought kind of odd 'til a friend needed a part made for his sawmill. -- Ever see an Amish sawmill run by a 200 hp Cummins diesel? The blade hardly ever bogs down! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi i didn't have the bros make because it was 2:00 pm friday, and the stores are on long island i'm in vt ,a 4.5 hour ride each way.The 4n1 bucket i had bought not that long ago,So i try to support my dealer ,if he can't warranty the hoses how much could they be ? This morning i called
him up and he said " if you were still in the business you could make them up" oh i will now . I brought up the list price question and why so high? "My suppler must have raised it up" righttt
Bottom line a steal at $190.00 Remember to support your dealer

Are you saying that he still charged you $190 for the hoses?

If he did, he was probably too embarrassed to lower it to the REAL going rate so as not to make him look bad in comparison to the first price. That's still more than double what you should have paid.
I's probably more hastle to keep going back and forth with him now, but in the future, I'd sure want to know what he's going to charge you BEFORE he does anything for you. Your call though...
