I answered to see why they were calling me and to try and find out why or how they got my phone number.
Yes I do pay to have it unlisted.

1) If I get repeated calls/messages I then call the telephone nuisance number, file a complaint and let them take care of it.

We have an even worse problem in New York state. It seems that the DOT is selling addresses. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I'm not sure if they also sell phone numbers, but I wouldn't put it past them.

I was reading an article last week about the governor of Oklahoma. They had a special phone installed that was to be used only in the case of a general emergency. The first time it rang it was a telemarketer.

A lot of that has to do with public records laws.
People would be shocked to see how much of their information (that they believe is private) is available to the public.
Everything on one's driver's license and registration plate is public record in NC. There are provisions to opt out of some of the info that is released, but not all of it.
