That rock looks like it’s a leaveitright. Leave it right there.

A few years ago I wanted to transplant a cherry tree (a bit different from a bolder, but...)...

Anyway, once I had the hole dug to the depth I wanted, I put a choker cable around the tree, and winched it under. That cut any tap roots, and gave me more less a free rootball to work with.

Ok, so a tree and a bolder are different, but you could use a similar concept of pulling a choker under the bolder. One of two things happens. Either it pulls through, or you have a choker cable permanently left behind in your hole for the next century till it rots away.

Anyway, that may help you get your bolder wiggling, moving, rolling.

When you're pulling on on the boulder with your 12K winch, run it through a single/double/triple/quadruple pulley. Whatever you can find. Ultimately you can multiply your pulling force by several times. Of course you still have to anchor it to something. Like attach it to your house and either the boulder moves, or your house moves.

Be careful of weak links in your system, stand back, and stay safe. 4 times 12K pulling power gives you 48K pulling power... make sure everything can handle that.

I love the video and the simple tool construction.

My uncle chose to build a 2 story log house. Bought a lot with a lot of similar sized fir trees (maybe 16" to 18" diameter). Bought a used logging crane. Used some kind of measuring device to carve groove in the upper logs to match the lower logs. And assembled the house one log at a time. Small sawmill to make all the interior lumber. It took a few years to do the project, but ultimately it is a spectacular log house.

Too bad that was all before YouTube.

Are you in a frost area. I have heard the frost pushes rocks up in the farm fields. Will frost help move that, or not enough frost over your winters? Would filling hole with water, let it freeze, then add more water, let freeze, repeat, would that maybe push up come spring? Just a thought. Jon

Might be a possibility if the estimated weight wasn't between 40-50K pounds. It won't budge with a 15K excavator. Started exploring using a deadman anchor and about 5 snatch blocks to create a 5:1 system
Build a sled for it, sleds slide much easier. Tip it back, tip it forward. Do like Archimedes.

Hmmmm, I think some zoning & wildlife protection ordinances have been violated here….

Did you obtain a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to remove this large boulder?
Did you obtain a “ground disturbance” permit from your local zoning office?
Did you call 8-1-1 to have the area searched and marked for underground utilities?
Have you contacted the Bureau of Wildlife management to make sure you did not disturb the nesting grounds of Bog Turtles (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) or the Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog (Rana boylii)? These species are protected under the American Endangered Species Act and could subject you to numerous fines up to $10,000/day and/or imprisonment.

I may have to report you to the local authorities.

I should have clarified that we want to keep it intact and use it. I'll edit my post to reflect that

Dig a path down so you can drive down to the rock, then drag the rock up the hill.

Your in New England right?
Try digging down like FatJay wrote, water the ramp so it freezes over, put in posts at top of the ramp to attach cable/heavy rope, winch rope and rock up ramp if you don't have something to tow it with.
Or just hire a Sikorsky. :)
