If you weren't able to identify it, go to the Virginia Tech Weed Identification website:

Virginia Tech Weed Identification Guide

The other thing would be to take a sample into either Rankins Hardware or the Warrenton Co-op. Besides identifying it, they'll quickly fix you up with the proper herbicide.

Knute, you must be pretty familar with the area!! I tried the VT site, the aid didnt even get me close to it, and I wasnt going to scroll thru hundreds of pics. Problem with Rankins is they have one or two managers there that halfway know what they're doing, the rest are ... well, you get the idea. Havent tried the Warrenton Co-op yet, was gonna hit the Marshall Co-op on the way home this evening to get their suggestions, maybe they carry Tordon 22K or Redeem, or equivalent. Thanks for the info though. :D

Stopped by the local co-op, they had Redeem, so I picked up a gal of it. Talked to another customer in there (the help wasnt too helpful), and he said it was too late in the year to spray, which is probably true. He also mentioned he got the best results from Grazon, but again it is controlled, so I would have to have someone spray for me, or get someone with a license to get some for me.

So, should I wait till spring to spray? Either way, I'll probably have to cut the field one more time.

Your best bet would be to contact your County Extension Agent. He/she can identify and give you proven recommendation of treatments that will work.

Depends on your growing season up there. Down here in Texas you'd probably have enough time to spray and kill off this years growth and then spray again in the spring to kill off the new growth but up there, if the weeds are shutting down for the winter, you could well be wasting money.

Grazon is a great product, use it all the time at the farm, but it is a mixture of picloram and 2-4-D and it sometimes has trouble killing weeds with bulbs or tubers. That's why Dow probably recommends the other 2 products. That's also why weed identification is so important because a lot of the time you can achieve results with straight 2-4-D which is a lot cheaper and easier to get. There's no sense in paying to kill or control weeds that you don't have.

I didn't mean to sound as if I was preaching but I have a S-I-L who loves to neuk anything that even looks as if it may be a weed. Thank the Lord they don't make a 3-pt flame thrower or she would be really dangerous.

Thanks for all the feedback. :D I talked to the extension office this am, and he pretty much agreed that spraying this time of the year wouldnt do much good cause the weeds are starting to shutdown anyway. Go ahead and mow, and then spray in the spring.

I've pos id'd the weeds as spotted napweed. The extension ofc person recommended ForeFront (also recommended Grazon, but it's controlled) as well as Redeem, neither are controlled. The ForeFront is supposed to be similar in makeup as Grazon but doesnt have the chemical that makes Grazon controlled.

So my plan now is to mow close, and spray in the spring with Redeem (I already picked that up), then spray again early summer (or when the weeds start popping up) with ForeFront.
