I use a 1/2 conduit box like this one
Conduit Body, C, 3/4 In Hub, PVC - Conduit and Outlet Bodies - Conduit - Electrical : Grainger Industrial Supply
Put the wires in through the end holes, make the connections with wire nuts, then put a little tape on each end to keep the epoxy from running out. Fill the box with liquid epoxy and screw the top on. Costs less than $15 and it doesn't matter if the UF jacket has grooves in it. I've had trouble with the shrink connection type of splice, never had a problem with a splice embedded in epoxy.
