couple of years ago I needed to splice my 220V well pump wire. Found special twist nuts at home depot.... they have sealed silicone gel packaged inside....when you insert the wires to be twisted together, the inserted wires break the seal allowing the goo to cure and make a water tight connection after the twist nuts complete the electrical connection.

This was a simple and effective solution for me. Has worked for years.

I was faced with this exact problem 20 years ago when I put in a decorative yard lamp. I used a piece of 1/2" PVC with a T in the center. I centered the splice and and taped the ends of the pipe, then pumped in silicon caulk into the center until it squeezed out the ends, past the tape. Twenty years later it has never tripped the GFCI.

i took a pump out last year because the well silted in an covered the motor, so it overheated: it had been in since about 1984: the wires were bare in several places, under the water: whoever put it in, didn't secure the wires, an they rubbed the insulation off: but they were still working. did not have a gfci on the pump though.

Here is what I have been using, It is a hollow compression type isolator that eventually lets water in after a few months. I could not find the Tyco Powergel Wraparound in stock at Home Depot or online anywhere. I did find it on Ebay and may consider that one. The silicone tape sounds like interesting. Ken Sweet

Ken, Look for the simple example Tom showed you. Home Depot and Lowes carry several waterpoof splice kits like this that are relatively inexpensive and very easy to use. So easy that you'll swear it can't be waterproof, but they work great even for deep wells. If you can't find them, ask for help. They are there.

Our local HD stores don't stock the gel pack, so I am going to order online either the gel pack or the silicone tape. Ken Sweet

I wasn't talking about the gel packs. I've used the waterproof kits like Tom showed, which are a simple crimp along with a shrink tube. When the shrink tube is heated it creates a gel or sealant that oozes out of the end as is shrinks tight. They are clean and easy to use. I've bought them at both HD and Lowes. The last time I used them was on a well pump wire I was replacing that was stretched out over a lawn, and I got it spliced during a rain shower. There's nothing wrong with ordering the gel packs, but I was trying to give you a solution you could use today.
Good luck.

The ones I suggested don't have any "snot" (at least that is what I call it) in them.
They has a piece of shrink tube to go over the whole thing with some hot melt glue on the in side when you shrink it it seals the joint.
Center the tube over the splice and start in the middle shrinking it working to one end then go back to the center and work to the other end.
Don't get any of the melted glue on your body it sticks worse than a hot grill cheese on the roof of your mouth.

BTW they make the same thing with the splice is 12-18" long to fix a cut wire so you dint have to use 2 and a piece of wire the heat shrink is about 24" long on these.

3M Splice Kit UF is designed to provide a reliable, moisture proof electrical connection for type U.F.-B underground feeder cable rated for 600 volts (Copper Wire Only) ranging from #14/3 without ground wire up to #8/3 with ground wire.
Full Description サ

The Splice Kit UF consists of a connector-insulation assembly and a heat shrink tube. The connector assembly contains four cylindrical set screw connectors separated by a piece of vinyl insulation. The heat shrink tube is a heavy-wall, adhesive-lined tube. Underground Feeder (UF)-B cables are flat, and typically have three solid conductors without ground or two solid conductors with a ground. They range in size from 8 AWG to 14 AWG. The most common UF cable size is 10-14 AWG. The 3M Splice Kit UF is offered in two versions: UF1 Standard Kit includes a 1.8" length terminal connector and an 8" length of heavy-wall, adhesive-lined heat shrink tube. UF2 Stretcher Kit has an 11.7 inch terminal connector and a 20 inch length of heavy-wall, adhesive-lined heat shrink tube. The Standard Kit is used in most of the applications. The Stretcher Kit is used in situations where a 7-10 inch section of the cable has been damaged or destroyed. It eliminates two connectors and a short piece of
