How do you approach tespassers?

I think the idea of confronting with a weapon requires some careful thought after what happened in Wisconsin last fall.

From CNN news:

In the same affidavit, Gillis quotes Hesebeck as saying Vang walked away from the group after exchanging words with someone. Vang got 40 yards away, removed the scope from his rifle, turned and began shooting, in some cases pursuing the hunters when they ran away, Hesebeck said.

HAYWARD, Wisconsin (CNN) -- The suspect in the shooting deaths of six deer hunters in northwest Wisconsin told investigators he fired at the hunters after they made racial slurs and shot at him, according to an affidavit released Tuesday.

We have a huge problem with drive-by hunters on ATV's. Our best solution so far is to let people walk on our property. No one is allowed to ATV or hunt but walkers are encouraged. They spot people hunting and tresspassing and generally the hunters leave before they get close enough to talk to them.

One hunter tried to tell a neighbour that he wasn't allowed on the property. The neighbour explained he had permission, plus the land is posted red which means no hunting, no exceptions, owner included. The hunter having a gun in hand seemed to understand who was in the wrong.

Still had 3 deer taken out of our furthest back field. Which means they were shooting towards houses.

Just had a talk with a father of a driver of a MTU (motorized trespassing unit)

I was out working when 2 MTU's showed up in my back yard. They, of course, turned around and headed out. I jumped on the tractor and went to the spot I figured that they came in. I was right and it turned out to be 2 kids.

I was a kid once, long time ago /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and we ran snowmobiles. We also ASKED PERMISSION.

I yelled at them. I did not tell them to get off, I did yell "DID YOU ASK PERMISSION!!!" and "NEXT YEAR, IF YOU ASK, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO RIDE HERE" Thing is, there is nowhere for them to go through to. The only thing they can do is ride around on my land. If they just wanted to go through, I dont think I would have a problem with it. FYI, the horse riders have permission to cross my ground, because they just cross it and horses dont do the damage even a little MTU does.

Well that was it till a week or so ago then the dad stopped by. He seemed nice, but a few statements just made the hair on my neck stand up and teeth bare.
He asked, and I told him that I have the logging trails planted with clover and I really didnt want folks on there. I also have a shooting range on my land, which his kids rode across. When I mentioned logging trails he interupted and said ATV trails (steam). He also said he moved to the country so he could ride ATV's. I wondered to myself why the **** he only bought 3 acres if he wanted to ride ATV's(steam). Then he went on about how there is a real nice trail in the woods. I did ask him if he paid the taxes on the trail, didnt get a answer on that one.
I was mostly pleasant overall, suprized myself.

Last hunting season on the last saturday I coouldnt hunt the back of my land through all of the orange coats. I didnt post then, but I think its coming. I have given my neighbors permission to hunt without a problem. If you ask first, I can be a nice guy. Take advantage of me, I can be ugly.
As for being armed, hunting season I am hunting, I am armed.

Anyway, it is a mindset. I got irritaded on Saturday at my boys Tball game. A chubby bleach blonde (CBB)(steriotype a obnoxious, NIMBY, soccer mom, suger sweet disingenous, full of herself, loud, ect ect)
was "talking" , everyone within 30 yards could hear her, to another person about how they just bought a place in the country, 2 acers, AND THEY HAD GOTTEN THEIR 6 YEAR OLD A 4 WHEELER.

Scuze me but how long would it take for a kid to get bored riding a MTU on 2 ac, part of which has a house on it.

Another bad example of how people abuse their rights for others. I've mentioned I'm a hunter and the idea that people don't ask first is ruining a good thing for people who would ask first, respect the owners land and offer in some way to compensate for the priviledge.
I could see you posting your land and have every right to. In the future if guys actually ASKED first (there's a concept?) you might be willing to try it. NY is trying (i say trying) to make it possible for everyone to exist but it sure sounds hard to do.

Just think of the fun all the neighbors will have on Sunday mornings when he is ripping his new dirt bike up the county rode at 50mph.

We see it all the time, rarely do the MTU's stay on their own parcels. Our county refuses to open supervised parks for them. Thusly, when they tire of their parcel, they seek out bigger places to be.

This should put a smile on the face of anyone that has problems with tresspassers. It started out bad, but was quickly resolved.

I have a friend with a brother that owns some hunting land. The brother was hunting deer with 2 friends when they saw 2 other hunters across a field. The owner went over and asked the guys to leave. They of course said that they had permission. He told them they didn't ask permission, and that he owned the land. They both pointed their shotguns at him (slugs only allowed in most of NYS) and told him they were staying. His 2 friends had followed at a distance, and immediately came to his aid. You see, one was a deputy, and the other was a Justice of the Peace, and they both had jurisdiction. The trespassers weapons were quickly confiscated and they were hauled off to the Iron Bar Motel. Durn city folks.

His 2 friends now have permission to hunt his land whenever they want!

"There is nothing that I own on my land that is so valuable that I am willing to give up my life for it."

I may not "own" my family but you can be **** sure they are valuable enough to me that I will, in a heartbeat, lay down my life for them...but not without inflicting my share of harm.

"That is where my 12 volt siren comes in handy. I just give that a blast when I know there is a trespasser on a ATV near by in the woods, and they turn and run back in the opposite direction."

What a great idea! I will definately give that a try. I know it scares the bejeepers out of the neighbors... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sure does....A couple of shot into the trunk should do the trick /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Scary stuff though. I can't believe how pathetic that is to actually threaten the land owner. Definite time for police and to press charges to max extent of the law.

That asian guy that killed those folks was a wakeup call. Now that we've all learned from his experience, I doubt any of us would be caught unawares in a fire fight. I practice all the time and seriously doubt he'd have a chance against the M1A or the 00 loaded shotgun. I'm not saying that I'm all set for an armed confrontation, I'm just saying that they'd better not be. The nearest law is almost an hour away so this is a very important point... if they were nice, I'll be nice, if my life is threatened, they get disarmed, one way or the other. Being out in the boonies already heightens the situation because we're on our own.

My buddy relates this story: A farmer near him heard shooting and went out and saw that one of his tanks was all shot up. He drove around and found what was obviously the perpertrator's vehicle. The farmer shot their car/truck up. Later, the goobers came up to the farmer's house asking if he'd seen anyone around because someone shot their truck up. He said "Gosh no, but I'd sure like to catch 'em, they shot my tank up too!!!"

I'm certainly not excited about killing someone but really, if you're out away from the law, or help, and someone levels a gun at you, don't you have a right, a responsibility even, to do something about it?

People are really polite when they roll way up the very clearly marked private road to find a fat guy with a big ugly gun. No need to point it, no need to say anything about it, just having it makes people polite. I had one guy, only one, get smart with me, and I didn't have a gun on me. The way I figure it, they are certainly breaking the law, and most likely up to no good. There's tweekers in the area, much more of a concern than hunters or MTUers, and when they're "lost" or "just checking things out" what they're doing is scoping out your property for theft later. I really think it a good idea to have them fear for their lives on our property. When I was a kid, I never felt comfortable trespassing. I knew for certain that it was wrong. People these days need to be educated, and it often falls on us to do it.

Unfortunate as it is...you are absolutely correct. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
