How do you break a FEL?

In a perfect world all the units would have that type. Makes the zerks a lot easier to get at...

The pins on mine have a zerk on one end and a hole in the middle where the grease comes out as well as a circular groove for the grease to distribute through. Neat pice of work.

Yep.. similar to mine.

My JD loaders about 5yrs old and the zerks are all on the sleaves that hold the pins. Ya gotta have the tractor running and tilt the bucket and raise the loader to get at all the pins. Its the bucket pins that get the most wear as they move close to 180deg with each dump. A lot of the other pins (like on the ends of the lift cylinders)only move a few degrees so don't need grease as often. Too much never hurts though, just more surplus to clean off...
Right now I am spending about two hrs/day clearing my driveway so the bucket pins get greased weekly, the rest not so often, unless its a sunny day...

I thought I broke my JD 410 FEL using it to dig some hard clay. The lift circuit stopped working. Turned out it was just the quick connect coupling had failed. Turns out that if the little clip inside lets loose and there is no longer any spring force to push the tip against the coupler on the other side, then no oil can flow in one direction!

Another thing I broke on mine was the pin on the shaft that goes across the bottom and holds the two curl mechanisms sync'd when there is no bucket attached (don't ask how that happened). Its a bit annoying now to switch out the bucket for the forks, but not quite annoying that I have bothered to figure out what size the pin is and fetch a replacement.

Another thing that broke is I now have a slow leak in one of the funny hose couplings that tap into the hard lines on the loader. Not sure how that happened. Its slow enought that I just wipe it off every so often.

I did manage to bend up my home-made forks frame a bit trying to use the forks to pry out a basketball hoop pole set in concrete. They were home-made lightwaeight forks. Just pounded the thing back to mostly straight.

The left mounting tower doesn't fit so well where the loader comes on and off the tractor and is a bit loose. Not sure if its just wear or soemthing cracked or popped. I will have to resolve that at some point.

Not sure if this counts is "breakage" or just wear - some of the corners of the teeth on my toothbar have been chipped off.

Bucket has numerous dents from rocks.

Paint rubbed off of bottom 1/3 of exterior and all interior surfaces of the bucket. Still some mostly black primer, but some bare / rust surfaces. Should probably hit it with some rustoleum in between uses once and a while.

OH oh that is bad! Are you actually using the bucket as is intended?

Do you require a session at "Bucket maintenance in original paint school" ?:D :D :D

Keeney- Must have been a flaw on the assembly line regarding that coupling leak as mine also started to leak. Its awkward getting the wrenches in but just tighten it up. The "curl" pins on mine went one day years ago when I didn't have the bucket lined up right while re-installing. Been using 2.5"x1/4" bolts(grade 3 or5) for pins since but they don't last as I am always changing from bucket to forks and back again. Doesn't take much to shear them off if the bucket gets set on ground that isn't level or hangs up when removing it.
My worst problem happened one day when my son got then bucket hung up when unhooking it and bent one of the curl brackets. Now the top spacing is 1/2" wider than the bottom. Makes it a little touchy to switch buckets.

Keep your load low and be as level tiltwise when you raise your load to drop it and follow all the previous suggestons. Also watch where your FEL is going to swing during turning. Jay

Of course, I meant the color-matched to JD Green Rustoleum. Way cheaper than the JD branded touchup paint, and you can get it at Mills Fleet-Farm.

Yes, I know purists would say its not "OEM", but if you really want to perfectly paint the working surfaces of your implements, you should probably just buy a second tractor to keep in the shed for show and an old used one that you actually use.
