How do you build an auto mechanical gate

Neal & Harv,

No need for a pillow. You'd be amazed at how much air comes out of a simple rubber hose when you drive on it.

That's a great idea. Now to figure out the valving.............

Oh to only have the time to play, darn, I've got to finish laying out a hundred and fifty post holes and then start digging them three and a half feet deep today. Gotta love this black gumbo clay. It's going to be fun.

Someplace among the junk, I've got a little piston thingy that came off an old gas station bell. This thing has a hose barb on it that fits 3/4" hose and a piston inside that pushes a 3/16" rod out the end. (it's supposed to slap the bell when a car drives over the hose.) I was playing around with it a few years ago and my son managed to darn near punch a hole through my right hand just by stomping on the hose. I'll bet one of these would open a gate catch when the tires hit the hose.

Neil I think we've found the card that takes us from being a high pair to becoming three of a kind. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Defective I'm not going to say you're perfect. But I strongly suspect you might be the supporting thinker that Neil and me have needed all these years.

Thanks for the input.

Do you recall if that was 3/4" ID hose. Maybe a mechanical only bell.

I have a 18 yr old drive way bell on my drive, but it is 3/8" ID and the bell is rung with an electric soloniod.

I like your idea, and was thinking, if more volume was needed, I might increase the size of the hose in the traffic area.

Thank you and Harv for all the good ideas.

Ditto on detective being our missing link Harv,

We might even become a threesome that is hard to keep up with.

By the way, how did the post setting go today?

Surely you didn't get to hot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Brad, This is another good idea for the self closing.

It never ceases to amaze me, how much good info is available on tbn.

Thanks to everybody for their good ideas.

Harv,

Do you forsee any differences in operation with Brad Blazer's hinge and the one you decribed.

If I understand it all correctly, this would accomplish the same lift as the one you described, but might be easy to make adjustable, by making all the hinges & bolts threaded through post & gate for any future adjustments in closing speed, ETC.

I've thought about building a gate with an automatic garage door opener. Just hit the remote, and she opens. I would need a cheap solar setup consisting of a $15 utility battery, a $25 solar controller, a $75 inverter, and a $100 solar panel. It's a little pricey, but that remote opening is priceless.

Harv & Neal: All 3 of my wives have often pointed out that I'm one of a kind, but I'd be proud to be lumped in with you guys. (uh-oh...I see trouble a-commin')

Neal: The hose is definitely 3/4" ID. I remember thinking when I got it that I'd have a fun time finding a use for it. Then I noticed the funny little brass thing on the end...

Now I can't get the idea out of my head. Gonna hafta hunt that thing down, see if the hose is still good, and find a way to measure just how much force it'll put out with a small vehicle running over the hose. I like the idea of a car door style latch. hhhmmm...
