How do you excavate/remove tree stumps??

Another way is an old rim like 38" farmall and run chain or cable over it .
It sets better on the ground.
BTW it also makes great fire ring to cook the steaks on for lunch, right on site /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I still prefer large hoe first and dozer second.

One problem I have is if u don't break some roots on the backside of tree before pulling or pushing they can snap off or split when pulled from above.
U have lots of leverage high up in a tree.

That's the way I do it. I reach as high as I can with my choke chain. Because the tree is tapered, it won't likely break unless it has a rotten spot. Just cutting 1 or 2 roots behind it makes a big difference. Once the tree starts moving even a little, you know you've won.

As some others have noted, it is easier to take the stumps out with the tree still attached. I prefer to take the whole thing out. I've pushed over several pines in the 12-14" range with my Kubota L4610--put the loader up about 6' and push, a little curl, a little push... once it moves it is mine. I can get the bucket up under the root ball, curl and push and over it goes.

Watch out for roots popping up, though. I usually have an observer watch to make sure I'm not risking me or the machine (in that order /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). I also only do it to healthy trees (dead branches are bad news). Biggest tree so far was a spruce about 18" at the base. Do it in the spring when the ground is loose; it is much easier on the tractor.

My way won't work on 12 inchers, but I took out a half dozen orange, peach and apricot trees a couple months ago. All were in 6-8 inch diameter range.

Backed the 4x4 pickup to the tree, cut most of the big branches into the truck leaving a 5 ft main trunk. Wrapped a chain around the trunk about bumper level, hooked the chain up to the class 5 hitch, put it in 4wd low and drove slowly (very slowly) forward. Truck groaned a little on the 8 incher. Did not even seem to notice the 6 inchers.

Did get to use the tractor ... to pick up the stump and drop it in the back of the truck after I cut off the firewood logs.

I don't know if this picture is what you're looking for but if you do a search for "pulling stumps" you'll find a thread with pictures from about a year ago that shows leverage has, leverage. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Polecat,
It was "the Duke" John Wayne.
It went "windage and elevation, windage and elevation Mrs.(?)"
I believe it was in a movie with Rock Hudson as a Confederate General and J.W. as a Union General after the Civil War.
Ah, I remember. "The Undefeated" Still don't remember the women's last name. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
