If you are picking up rocks by hand, I recommend one of these.

Get the ones with the rubber cups.

I use mine for brush also.

. . . I actually found a 3 pt Chain harrow that I like. Just don't know the price.

That's an ABI 3-point rake. Here's a link:

3 Point Chain Harrows ::ABI Attachments::

I priced them and the price was higher than a Tractor Supply drag-type chain harrow (of course), but I wasn't shocked or offended by the price compared to a plain old drag-type.

I don't have the pricing info any more and can't remember what it was or what size I priced. But I seem to recall that it wasn't much more than buying a drag-type and a boom pole and doing some southern engineering to make a half-azzed lift-type out of it.

Will it move rocks or just go over them?

I suspect it will move them a few feet at best and then go over them. I wasn't recommending that chain harrow for rock removal. I was just identifying the one someone mentioned with a pic.

Here you go Rockhound - RockHound Landscape Rake
My landscape contractor used a Rockhound to clear rocks and make a seed bed for planting grass and shrubs on our 5 acre lawn. He used the one which attaches to a skid steer and it worked great. He rented it from a local rental business. I've yet to find a rock in the lawn. Note there is also a model with 3PH attach.

I have seen items shown on TBN that are towed behind, dig into the ground and separate the rocks from the dirt. It looks like it would require a lot of HP to pull it though. From photos it appears that the machine is pulled 6-12" deep and the rocks are separated from the dirt on a moving chain link system that deposits the rocks in a back bucket that is then hydraulically dumped.
I have no personal experience with one, although if it was available in my area, I would certainly rent one if it was reasonably priced.

I don't see this as an item to buy, but maybe rent one if locally available.

Tater Digger! sounds like the old Tater Diggers we had when I was a kid.

Kinda like this...

I get some rocks on my land, I push my pallet forks under, grapple them and pull them out of the ground,

Then load them on my wagon,

and move them out of my fields,

When the neighbor kids where young I'd set a coke can on my other neighbors fence post and tell them I'd give them a nickel for every time they knocked the can off with a rock. They'd be out there throwing rocks from my property onto my neighbor's all day and it would usually cost less than a dollar ;)

I have never had luck with my tined bucket. It just gets plugged up with debris and sod.

My quite ambitious project is to build a clone "flip screen" bucket. A most ingenious device you can google. Basically a specially designed bucket with a top portion, a shelf inside and a screening plant style mesh top. You dig into a pile or scrape up material, go to your good pile, and then you rotate the entire bucket. The nice stuff comes through the screen. Then you go to your debris pile and rotate the bucket in the other direction emptying the garbage, debris and stones.

I have a Harley Pro 8 rake, and although it is a truly marvelous piece of gear, one is still stuck with tons of windrowed stones mixed in with very nice soil. This flip screen copy cat should finally be the answer to my almost life long battle with the stones around here!

It has been on my mind for three years along with a hundred other projects, but I did buy the hydraulic motors for it only yesterday!

I have a huge pile of rocks that someday I will build something with. Friends and relatives are always asking if they can pick through the pile and take some for landscaping.

I always say no, why would I give away my hard earned rocks?
:)

People were steeling my rocks so I started storing them in the front yard where I can see and enjoy them.

I also have a rock pile to enjoy.

It was a small pile when we moved here 4 years ago, but I have added to it.

I use my land rake to pile up rocks up to about 4" or so. The rake tines are spread about 1 1/2" - 2" or so which lets the soil go on through.

The land rake is also handy for de-thatching every Spring, and for raking up little sticks and limbs laying around. Naturally, I abuse mine by also using it to pull out briers and trash around trees, as well as smoothing down the quarter-mile driveway. Handy tool to have around for sure.

Now - if you're talking about "rocks" like some of the pictures above, i.e. the size of a small car... the land rake is not the tool for you :)

You just need to get some BIGGER rocks!! NO ONE steals mine!

Sometimes they are so big, you have to drag them to higher ground, where you can get ahold of them,

and get a bigger "hammer" to lift them! lol

Dynalift Digs Stone June 6 1993.jpg

This guy was always a nuisance for the farmers, being almost totally hidden, but when I hit it with a snow mobile, one warm summer evening, it's number was up!

Well here's my update on this thread. I used my mower and mowed the entire property. What a blast! I never hooked up nor used a PTO mower. My Landpride RCR 1860 did a great job! then I purchased a new TSC Landscape Rake and Raked up all the cuttings along with all the small rocks. Worked Great! Price was right also at $499 minus 10% off from manager. I found out there are 3 TSC stores near my ranch. What a cool store. Had a lot of useful items for around the ranch. The land looks great and the Landscape rake did a great job cleaning up. I would rake then lift the PTO and make small piles throughout. Then picked up and made one big pile. Tomorrow comes the dump trailer and the clippings and rocks will be gone. Gotta love these tractors.
