Now, you experienced farmers don't laugh at this newbie-to-tractors question! In the spring when I till where the vegetable garden will be, what attachment do I need to hill the rows before planting? I have a 5' tiller that I'll use first to prepare the garden area. A neighbour has a device of some sort for his walk-behind tiller that creates nice planting hills just the right distance apart. Is there a similar thing I should look for that will just connect to the 3-point?

Perfect, thanks nybirdman, that's what I needed! I didn't even know what to look for. I think i could make something like that up too. Sounds like a winter project!! :)

Here's the one I built. It's a Brinly cultivator, with the cultivator "feet" removed. I bought the little discs at a local tractor supply store and welded them to steel rods. Works great. Only does one row at a time, but I only have about 10 rows in my garden.

Thanks Tiger. Do you have any pics closer up of it?

hr3, that would be great. I was thinking about how to do the tilling and hilling in one action. Heck, if my neighbour can do that with his walk-behind, surely I can do it with a tractor!! :p

Those are the only two pics I have with the discs. Here is a pic of the cultivator with the correct shanks on it. These little Brinly cultivators can be bought for about 75 bucks. They have alot of adjustment which is good and bad. Things really have to be tight or they will move around once you put it in the dirt. It is not the best setup by far, but I got my cultivator cheap and the discs were about 20 bucks each. I've got less than 100 bucks in mine and it doubles as the cultivator too.

I think this may be the one you were looking for. I agree, it is a very good design and I would like to make one for my tiller. Easy to remove and replace.

GreenMtns, many thanks, I never would have found that thread. Those are terrific designs and something quite do-able! Appreciate the link! :D:) And Tiger, thanks for additional pic, that helps a lot!

Where I grew up (near the Nova Scotia border) it was called a horse-hoe. We had an original horse-drawn one (wooden frame and handles) that I got the pleasure of operating behind a M-H Pony before my father rebuilt it with a steel frame to attach directly to the tractor's lift. It used special mouldboards (if that's what they're called) rather than discs. I later modified it for him when he got a tractor with a TPH. It's still around somewhere - I've got to find it and take a pic.

The only bad thing about adding that attachment to the tiller, and not keeping it separate is that you lose seat time :(

I'm thinking of maybe building me a bigger one that will do multiple rows, but keeping it separate from the tiller as to extend my time of playing in the dirt. :D
