You and me would trust our wives to do that job, but many wouldn't want the wife anywhere near the tractor in in such a compromised position! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Well, I finally got time to look into my blade binding problem. I flipped the mower over and discovered that the stump jumper is bent on one end. this is causing just enough deflection to make the blade stick if it is moving slow. I guess the short term solution is to keep my RPMs up, but there is a definite wear arc on the stump jumper where the blade has been hitting it and I am concerned that it may have weakened it to a point where it may fail if I spin it up too high.

Anyone replaced/repaired one of these?

A neighbor actually lost life doing a blade sharpening job on his bruh hog. His adolescent son accidentally bumped the tractor starter while Daddy was under the machine. PTO lever was engaged and Cut the top of his head off. 15 years later and the Son is still not mentally stable.-Ken Sweet

HUmmm you might take it off and heat it enough to remove the bend. i have never taken a stump jumper off but it doesnt look that hard. and you said it was old and brand not known so parts might be hard to find.

Ken you will make me have nightmares now! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

We have a machine shop in the facility where I work. So I might just pull it off and have them make me a new one (they do personal stuff all the time, brake rotors, flywheels, etc...). I pulled both blades off (had to use an impact wrench) and took them in. Had one of the QC inspectors do a Dye Penetrant test on them and one has a crack that runs about 3/8 of an inch in from the leading edge of the blade about 2 inches from the blade tip so it looks like I'm gonna have to replace the blades too.

Kinda reminds me of the story where the an old guy was using an axe that once belonged to Abraham Lincoln, but since then it had 3 new heads and 5 new handles.

wow gettin pretty high tech there, dye checking the blades and all! tho about the stumpjumper thats gona be pretty hard to make, it would be alot easier for them to just straighten out the original one, im a machinist and i know myself i would probably just straighten out and weld up the old one before attempting to make a new one
