This is (I'm told) a Japanese Maple /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
This use to be over at father in laws & was hitting his house, so he was gonna have to cut it down. Wifey wanted it...
How to move??
WAY too close to foundation of house for my comfort level to dig, so, we strapped a strap (not chain) around it, hooked strap to front bucket and literally PLUCKED (or ripped? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) it straight out of the ground. Just raw power to lift it, roots & all.
Kept it hooked to bucket, drove home with it dangling on front end loader, turned Brutus around, dug hole with hoe, (and tree still dangling like a fish in sharks mouth). Turned back around & plunked tree into new home.
This was 3 years ago & today...seems no worse for the wear.
Personally, I thought ripping it out of the ground (with no ground breaking w/backhoe was rather aggressive and we'd snap trunk in half. Though I thought it to be excessive, the results seem to be ok.
Maybe trees are more resiliant than we give credit?
"so far" (knocking on wood) most of the trees we've transplanted have survived. Only lost 2 or 3 that I can think of. (out of maybe 30 total)
