I'm using slabs from my sawmill. Last year I put sawdust between the rows in my strawberries. The downside is that it gives slugs a place to hang out, but I can take care of that with a salt shaker.

You smash the slugs with a salt shaker?!?

But seriously, as sawdust is plentiful around here and we are putting in a new strawberry bed, I might have to try that.

I am switching to rai$ed beds this year with grass between beds. Cardboard off season to keep weeds smothered is my goal. Never thought that I would do it, but just too many weeds.

I thought of grass as well. I see some plusses and minuses in my case. I think it would look better and could be mowed between the beds with the hand mower and trimmed around the edges with the trimmer.

On the down side, do I really want to have to mow/trim even more grass around this place??

Need to stop researching as now I'm just learning about Occultation and Solarization. Might be something to consider earlier in the Spring next year.

I don't know if there is a "humane" way to deal with slugs. I Shish Kabob them with whatever stick or twig I find handy at the moment. Not much mess, and they don't survive.

I suppose one could add salt for a seasoning if one wishes.

Beer? They adore it. Either a partially full/empty beer bottle on its side or saucers of beer. The scent of yeast and fermentation attracts them. Not too shabby for earwigs as well. No need to hunt them down with salt.

I do both. Cans of beer underneath cardboard, and salt for any I see while working around the garden. When I had a dog I had to be careful about keeping them cleaned up though.
When I moved here 20 years ago the slugs were terrible for some reason. I remember one year when the snow was just starting to melt, they were showing up in any patch of bare ground which showed

After all of the rain we had last year, I expect the population to be healthy.
