I'm thinking about taking off my backhoe (BT600) for Winter and leaving a rear blade on so I'm ready for snow. I've never had the backhoe off for more than a few hours, so I'm concerned about leakdown and either the backhoe falling over in the garage, or leaking down to the point that the hoses won't reach so I can get it back up again to remount on the tractor in spring. When the backhoe is sitting on the ground, it depends on the cylinders to hold it up. What happens when they leak down? Will it fall over? How do others store their backhoe so this is not an issue?

I don't have the same brand, but they are all made similar. I put a concrete block down and set the frame on it. Then when I unhook, I can raise the arms and extend the hoe then turn off the engine so that I can relief all of the pressure off of the lines before disconnecting them. Never have had a problem rehooking even after several months.

Jack stands are only about $15/pair. Set these under the
cross member. And then spray the exposed rams with
"Fluid Film" or some such product to prevent corossion.

Mine's off most of the time. I used a block once cuz I thought the hoses would be too short but they actually pull out from the hoe much farther than where they are normally at rest.
The block seemed to be a prob cuz the area I leave the hoe is on a slight slope.
Never have had the slighest incling that it wanted to fall over though everything does bleed down. You might want to put a seatbelt on it though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Cheers!

I put my BH on a dolly. Then use a chain and hook to hold the outriggers up. Dipper and bucket stay in same position during storage. Here is a thread that started out with installing a BH. But further down it covers storage. Click Here

Thanks all for the replies. Just picked up a 6' blade tonight. Ready for snow. Too heavy to lift by myself so I lifted it out of my trailer with the backhoe. See attached.

Things do leak down over time, but not a problem. I leave my BH off of the BX22 most of winter, when I have the snowblower on. Even when the outriggers leak down, it sits nicely on the bottom frame of the BH, and is very stable and in no risk of tipping over. Also when you go to remount, the hoses are long enough, no matter how low it sits. I was likewise worried when I first got it, and it did seem like the hose would not reach, but there was a lot of extra slack in the hose on the BH side, and a little tug and everything fit as needed.

Mike,

I have stored my BH two ways. Both the mechanic and the salesman put it as shown in the attached photo. I stored it this way for a couple of months and it just laid-down completely flat. Very stable, but takes a LOT of space.

The way I store it (sorry no photo it's mounted now) is more folded-up, with the rear arm just about vertical. I don't like the way it leaks-down from that position (it starts to lean toward the mounts), so I put a couple of jackstands on the lower mount bar and a screw jack under the pivot. Overkill probably, but very stable, easy to re-mount and after the bucket pivot bottoms-out it doesn't leak-down at all.

Don't forget to cover the extended rods with grease!

Happy plowing,

Russell in Texas

A year or more ago, there was a thread regarding backhoe dollies for BX22s and BX23s. A fair number of folks had built dollies and kept the BHs in their garage. There were detailed descriptions and photos. The designs were fairly varied. You can find this old thread in the archives using the search functions. If you can't find it, post again here and I'll look it up for you.

Actually, if you click on this old post of mine you will wind up in one short thread about BH dollies for BXs. When you reach that post, you will find links to two other threads on the same subject. Also, when you reach this first link, if you scroll up and down within that thread, you will find one more link to a fourth thread on the subject of BX BH dollies.
