How do you tell if it's a scam or not?

We have sold many many tractors to all walks of life around here.
Its called a wire transfer or they take a hike.

I still have a check for $6100.00 hanging on the wall to show to customers that insist their out of state check is good, I dont care if they show up with kids, dog, wife, trailer ect...

We deliver most of our tractors locally, so the risk is small for in state checks.

What is going to happen in this country is that only cash is accepted for anything, thanks to the scammers and the internet.

You may be right, but so far it's been going the other way. We use almost no cash anymore, and rarely even write a check. When I bought a boat last August, the dealer did ask for a cashier's check and I obliged. I'm not sure how much good it would do to go to all cash, but I figure that would be a bonanza for the counterfeiters.:D

In our Country the incidence of counterfeit money, as a percentage of money in circulation is a lot. I don't remember the exact numbers but it is really high as compared to some other countries(most countries don't want to tell the numbers). The Government is changing the bills all the time and doesn't seem to be able to get the numbers downCanadian hundred-dollar bill . Holograms, special paper, dots etc etc don't seem to work. The business I am in there are a lot of people paying cash instead of a check. If you write a bad check I can take you to court and possibly recover my money . If you give me counterfeit money, I have to know it is counterfeit, then "prove"you gave it to me. Obviously if I knew, I wouldn't have taken it, and it might be a little while till I try and spend it which compounds the problem. Then I have to remember who for sure even gave it to me:confused: . In the end I will have a piece of paper that is worth nothing, don't know or can prove who gave it to me and the only way to recoup my money is to give it to someone else, which is breaking the law. I don't know the answer but cash potentially is as tricky as anything else.

could you use paypal?

They can scam you with Paypal as well as any other way. You must be on your toes and alert on all transactions.

Attached is a fake cashiers check I received today for $1800.00. Note that they sent it FedEx overnight instead of mailing it to prevent themselves from getting in trouble with the Feds for mail fraud.

They wanted to buy a $30 item but "someone owed them $1800" so they had them make the check out to me and sent it to me and told me to cash it and "keep $200 for my trouble" then wire them the balance of the money and mail the $30 item. The bank teller said "the check looks good, deposit it and wait for it to clear before sending money". I will just tear it up because I know it is fake and I don't want the bank to charge me a fee when it bounces. At least the scammers wasted some of their own money sending it to me. IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS FAKE!!!!!!!

Please don't ask me to sell you the check for $100, I can only resist so much temptation.:D :D :) :) :D :D

Interesting check. Amusing, too. Hanley Wood is a well-known company,
not a person. Even has the diamond logo. Kind a like getting a check
from "Ralph Lauren" or "Hermann Miller", with signatures in those names.
Also, the bank's tel # is removed. I wonder, does this fake check have
anything on the back? I bet not. There are lots of tells.

BTW, a decent bank or CU will not charge you if the check is NG, unless
you withdraw against it. If you call, you will know the check is NG in 30 sec.
If you deposit it, you will know in as much as 2 weeks.

talleyho8, unbelievable! I would almost be tempted to contact Fed-Ex about this. Even though it may not be mail fraud, it is still interstate crime so I would call my local fbi office. i don't think I would jsut rip it up and throw it away. to bad you handled it, could have lifted finger prints off of it.

As I mentioned earlier, the cops are not the least bit interested in catching these people.

The back looks more realistic than the front with full security features and details.

My bank charges $5 if the check is returned.

My bank teller had the check in her hand and said it looks good. The bank can not tell over the phone. There are too many ways to get around it. They can get a real check from that bank and make fake copies of it to send out to 100 different people with a fake signature on those copies. Over the phone the bank will say it is a good check because they can't see it to tell it is a copy with a fake signature and they are just verifying the real check that you don't have. After a few days they can cash the real check and meanwhile the fake checks will bounce.

CORRECT cp1969. The police are not interested and will not waste their time. No one lost any money on this deal but the scammer and the police have better things to do. (Right now in our area, they are too busy arresting other police and catching the crooks the DA lets out of jail before the cop finishes his report, but that needs to be in a different thread)

I wish everyone who had contact with a scammer like this would agree to go along with the scam. Then wait for him to waste his time and money sending you a fake check, then tear it up and don't reply to him again. Maybe if they lost money enough doing this they would quit.;)
