I just checked, Whiting Ks does not have winter, just cool fall days and nights . Whiting, KS Weather Forecast & Monthly Average Temperatures
Well, I hate to spoil your party, but you full of it. For starter were located North of i-70. Late November through first part of March is fair game for snow. Some winters we get more than others. Tell me something, with temps in the twenties at times especially in december, January and February it is not going to rain. Why am I buying well over 1000 gallons of propane every winter, how about to heat the house. And yes after a snow storm, temps can plummet to zero. By the way, I-70 cuts across USA going throw denver, kansas city, st louis, indianapolis, across ohio, into Pennsylvania, and acroas Maryland. Now if all of the places get snow in the winter, how did I miss the snow being North of I-70??? Maybe you ought to take a geography lesson and do a little more research. Sorry to spoil you party.

OK, 1 more perspective:

. . . . . .
5) I disagree with several posters on turf tire traction. The very slightest spin on wet or heavy snow turns it to pure ice under the tires and you will be surprised how easy it is to get hung in deep snow. Strongly recommend getting the mild bar tread fat tires that are like turf tires in size but have shallow bars sort of like Ag tread but less aggressive. These will give you MUCH better traction in snow & probably allow you to avoid chains. [That is if you can tolerate the mild bars on your lawn...]
.

In choosing tire types at purchase of my GC1715, I knew that the industrial tire pattern might be better against puncture but not good for lawns. And because I have lots of slope steepness areas, I also knew the industrial tread pattern would not be nearly the grab on slopes or angles of driveway or sidewalk.

The reason is that industriasl are more puncture resistant because there are far less tread sipes than turf tires have. But that same lack of sipes in quantity is why they are not as forgiving on lawns or good on slopes.

But when it came to snow and ice I didn't predict just how good turfs would be even though my best tire choices for cars and trucks have always been a much more sipe designed tire non-ridgid tread design.

Not only is my winter traction on my SCUT excellent, but I was also surprised how my SCUT has excellent snow traction on my lawn up to about 8 inches of depth.

Take as an example on 4wd pickup trucks . . . a very common tire is a Wrangler tire. They aren't the smoothest or quietest on the highway but they sure can move you in the traction department. A Wrangler tire tread is very similar in tread pattern to a turf tire because it has many cleats and sipes. An excellent car traction tire for winter needs is a Goodyear triple tread for the same reason of sipe and tread design.

A friend has industrial tires on his SCUT. They work very well for him in terrain that has lots of brush hogged willow stumps but he has to be so very careful on his lawn - no tight turns or steep banks for his nice lawn. And because of traction in winter, he's now going to rubber tire chains because his driveway is "all slip and no grip" as he describes snow clearing.

The logic of traction is to have many irregular edges and no straight lines and no mud :)

I'm in total agreement. The turfs have been excellent in snow. Up here I've been out in 12+ inches at a time and have never had any issues. On the steeper end of the driveway I just push the snow down. The turfs are also easy on the lawn. That was an important requirement when looking for the tractor.

Snow + Tractor = FUN!

We don't get a serious amount of snow here - maybe three feet on the ground at any one time. I have a mile long gravel driveway - it has never drifted to any great extent. Over the 35+ years I've been here, I've used bucket on FEL, rear blade and rear mounted - PTO driven blower.

The bucket on the FEL is better than shoveling by hand but otherwise its a PITA. Now that I have a larger tractor that weighs 10,000+ pounds - I use the rear blade exclusively. The rear blade offset plus the tractor weight is more than sufficient to clear any frozen berms on the driveway.

When I had a smaller tractor - Ford 1700 4WD - I used the PTO driven rear blower to clear the berms. This also was a PITA - 3 to 4 hours driving in reverse, being covered constantly with blown snow - only a minor "thrill" for the first 15 minuets or so.

BTW - I've only ever had R1's on my tractors. Any other types would just be playing games out here. I have neither the time or desire to play games.

Just found these snowblower on sale at our local tractor supply. Don't know why they are there if we don't get any snow or have winter by the way, there are not accurate records for whitin g ks. The town is maybe 150-200 people. You will have to check larger towns, like kanas city, topeka, Leavenworth, salina, goodland, wichita, etc.

We used to have a site that hosted snow information but unfortunately it collapsed from snow load on the roof.
