How does this bearing work???

Im in the middle of restoring a model 225 JD offset disc. I have it completely disassembled, sandblasted, painted. I have new discs. I have ordered new bearings. In examining the old bearings, I notice that it has a seal on either side that protct the balls inside. I also notice that the bearing has to be pressed into the bearing house ( I had to have a machine shop remove the old ones) which has a grease zirk in it. Originally, I assumed putting grease into the zirk greased the ball bearings in the bearing itself. After close examination, I cannot see how the bearings get greased because it appears ther there is no way the grease can get into the ball bearings themselves. Can anyone enlighten me.

PLEASE tell me you did not paint the bearing hub bores or I will get another Schlitz out of the fridge!!!!!!!!!

If you did that you will have sand all the paint off, UGH!


Your new bearings are sealed with grease in them, which is also known as lubed for life.


do not worry about that part, and do not remove the seals or I will smack your patties:laughing::thumbsup:


first things first:

The press fit bearings will require you to put them in the freezer overnight to get them to drop in with a block of wood and a dead blow rubber mallet.

many bearings (originally) were only sealed on one side...new (improved) productions of the same bearing(s) now come sealed on both sides

Thanks guys. Luckily, I had a professional do the blasting and painting and they did not paint the bearing hub bores.

That freezer idea sounds good. I will definately give it a try.

So really, If I get bearings that are sealed on both sides, is there any need to put grease in the zirk?? I cant see where the grease has anywhere to go!!

There is a grove in some bearings that allow grease to flow to the inside.

Some bearings are double sealed, and some have seals one side only. The open side goes to the inside of the tube that has a grease fittings. Some people over grease bearings, and there is something called over greasing. To much is not good.

A good many of the pressed in bearings are not re-greasable.

Grease is inserted into the cavity where the grease fitting is, and the grease is forced into the bearing.

No need to grease it if it is sealed on both sides, if you did grease it could or would distort the housing and break it from the pressure if the press fit is still true which it most likely is.

I have had bearing surfaces so tight that the grease physically broke the anchors for the roll pins on mining machinery which were supposed to prevent the pins from spinning(because they were installed with turbine oil).

no need to remove the zerks as it would be one more place for dirt to collect etc.

Freezing the bearing in dry ice for 30-45 minutes works a whole lot better than your freezer.

The original equipment bearings that came on the disk harrow were open, with an inner race that extended substantially beyond the sides of the outer race. Separate grease/oil seals were installed in each side of the housing after the bearing was pressed in. These seals fit around the extended inner race, so the bearing was in a chamber that was in theory sealed from dirt, and grease was pumped into the grease zerk and flowed to the bearing via a groove machined into the bore of the housing. The seals were installed with the lip to the outside and were designed so that grease could (and should) be pumped into the housing until it flowed out through the seals. This did not damage the seals because the grease was not pumped against the direction of seal. Pumping the grease until it flowed removed (or was supposed to remove) any contaminants that sneaked in past the seals. Ag universal joint seals are designed this way and that is why they should be greased until the grease flows past the seals.

I've always wanted to have access to it, but didn't really know where to look to purchase some.

Many grocery stores have it nowdays...look for chest freezers in their frozen food sections...

large sockets make great bearing drivers. ditto on the sealed bearings not needing grease.
