I got the rest of the string up for the pinto beans just in time. They were already out growing what I had put up last week. I saw the first beans on the vines. Picked the first picking of the brown crowders. Mowed the old corn and peas today.
Those beans and peas look some kind of healthy. Enjoy!
My parents used to have a huge garden, with most of the space taken by sweet corn and purple hull peas. We did lots of corn freezing and shelling peas. My Mom had some peas for our lunch last time I was there. She was lamenting because she just cannot find store bought peas that are even close to what she used to put up. If I can work it out I am going to buy her some already shelled peas at a farmers market and let her freeze them. Will not be minimum "field to freezer" time like she sought but should be better than current store bought.
Sams and other stores have some very good frozen lima beans, but no one seems to have decent peas for sell.
I got out after supper and watered the peppers, picked cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Also clipped a few melons and banana cantaloupe. Then I worked my young squash plants with my stirrup hoe, and plowed the young peas, corn and green beans. I worked until it was too dark to see. I need to spray the peas, but I ran out of time. Maybe tomorrow.
