How far can I run a water line?

We have actually had problems with water getting stale in a large line for a waterer quite a distance away...

Just not enough demand so the water was never fresh and being in drought conditions just letting it run was not a good option.

I did the calculations before running about 1100 feet of poly line down the hill and down to a little stream there. Used to be a chemical engineer and did this kind of calc all the time (using charts in books).

There's very little pressure drop in 3/4" line for normal 1-5 gpm flow rates.

If you want something like 50 gpm like my next door naked neighbor wants, you'll need 2 1/2" stuff.

This is a big reason why Water Departments flush out hydrants. A 6 inch water line is too big for most neighborhoods and the water sits in it too long.

^^^Like your added picture... how is the van working out?

To keep on topic... how many feet of 1" poly can you fit inside the van...;-)

With the FD we flush them to get all that rust and chunks out so we don't get it into our tanks and have metal find its way to a pump.

They would flush lines every year all the while I was growing up... they have not flushed any lines for at least 5 years due to the mega drought...

Or through the pump and clog the nozzle. I had that happen early in my career while on a ladder. Not fun.

Thank you. The mini van has surprised us in how useful it is. My wife loves it!!!

Are your pipes cast iron? Most of them here are C900 or something similar.

I honestly don't know. I bet the ones out toward us are that olastic, but the hydrants themselves are metal.

There is a bunch of crud that comes out of them that's for sure! Even on ones we regularly pull water for our trucks. Now I'm in a really small town. We don't fill trucks that often, it could be a month or more till we full a truck sometimes from a certain hydrant.
