How far can LEO go?

... I know some of you LEO will say better them die than 100 others they might would have killed that night with there reckless driving, But they were on their way home and would had simply went to bed, ...

And how did the officer know they were on their way home? Did they have a banner on the back of the car stating, "Don't worry about us occifer. We're headed home!"???

Never the person doing wrong's fault is it?

Yep, your link includes my town. But to say it has speed traps ???? Well, I've lived here five and a half years and I'm out on the streets almost every day. I have occasionally seen a patrol car parked where I believe the officer was working radar, but almost never see an officer with a violator stopped. I guess it depends on your definition of "speedtrap". Apparently any place a police officer ever wrote a speeding ticket is included in your link. Sure glad my town is a speedtrap. In fact, I live less than half a mile from the police department.

I enjoyed reading the posts for my town. About half of them are directly across from schools and are being done while school is starting or getting out. I guess making sure that people are slowing down and paying attention when children are going to or leaving school constitutes a speed trap now.

Tim, policies on when to chase, whether to chase at all, what speeds, etc. is something that's been discussed both by law enforcement and others for many years. Many different things have been tried. No perfect answer has ever been found and probably will never be found.

I reckon most, if not all, of us have opinions as to what should be done, but those opinions are far from universal, so I won't go into my own.;)

I've driven my share of high speed pursuits, most of which ended in minor accidents and one of which ended with a fatality for a passenger in the car I was chasing in excess of 110 mph when he crashed. I was never involved in an accident myself during a chase, but perhaps that was luck as much as anything else. I've done just a little (not much) racing on the track, and that's nothing compared to high speed chases on the streets. High speed chases are not something most officers want to do.

My condolences to you and yours deepNdirt, but keep in mind that your uncle chose not to stop. His thought processes may have been idled due to alcohol, but it was still his ultimate decision. It was his choice. As per my previous post, he suffered a fleeting moment of 'stupid' which exascerbated the outcome.

You are correct that high speed pursuits (as frequently seen on various television programs) became ever more restricted and controlled from the 1970's onwards. Liability issues prevail in each and every incident and when the police are involved in a death, you can be assured there will a lawyer ever willing to take the case and go for the 'deep pockets of the city, town, county, state or whatever'.

Law suits aside, consider your commentary as being indicative of the response to a close, family related and very tragic event. A knee jerk reaction to such, is to blame and seek remedy to the event, and being human, ever reluctant to believe your own blood could be the author(s) of their own misfortune.

But getting back to your original post, between the reports, scheduling, off time, court, and every other thing that seems to occupy and demand a cops attention today - the fact that SOMEONE is actually querying those serial numbers is a good sign that your local constabulary is actually doing their job.

With the lack of visability in most jurisdictions these days, someone doing there job is a GOOD THING.

Thanks for the gesture, although
Sorry I know you must be mistaken, But it was not my Uncle that was driving the car that morning, They were passengers in the car,
just want to make this clear.;)

and yes it is a good thing that we have LEO that is on their toes looking for the bad guy's....
but i said it before they seem to be barking up the wrong tree, when no bad guy's are being found. but only legal citizens,......... Oh yeah we don't ride around with banners on the back of our trucks for the LEO's to read that we are the good guy's...... how would they know?
surely not by checking us out through running our tag numbers while fallowing us a short distance,
Go ahead and stop us for some reason just so can climb aboard our trailer and have a look at the tractor and serial no#

Oh if it helps I'll get me one of them banners:D

NO, LAW is something not to be toyed with. I was an Ambassador of the United States at the time.

When I or anyone nearby is threatened, I do have the right of defense. Pulled over for routine observation, no issues, my trailer hauls my equipment if needed.

OK lets assume , no likey drunk tank ???

DeepNDirt,

It is very sad what happened to your uncle and his friends. But the rest of the members of society hired that officer and asked him to stop drivers who looked drunk and chase them if they ran.

Assuming the officer followed the policies of the time, please direct your bad feelings towards the public at large, as he was just our dutiful servant.
