How far out can I extend a structure supported on one end?

thanks for the helpful explanation

Supports can fail in the technical sense in that they allow excessive movement, but they rarely completely fail.
Most rolled beams will fail in compression of the flange in the area of highest moment if loaded as a cantilever. The highest moment would be at the support closest to the water

Failure can also occur at the land side support if the connection is not properly anchored in the concrete as could happen if there is not sufficient steel - concrete contact which indicates a design would be required. A little different than the comment of covering the beam end with concrete and adding some rebar!

The two support system is actually a continuous beam with an extension on one end. Again different from a true cantilevered beam.

If you want a full fixed moment connection at the end support you would also need to analyze the geotechnical loads on footing. An integral abutment is not considered a full fixed connection.

So, you mean it's different than adding a little concrete and rebar or throwing another irrevalent term at it?

Seems the OP got some professional advice and has his situation well in hand.

Geotechnical ? Does that refer to Tonka toys and a sandbox?

Every designed concrete structure has concrete with a little rebar
You were throwing out technical terms that were possibly confusing. I added terms to clarify situation.
Ld1 added comment about anchor bolts which was good, but average guy can get rebar easier. Both anchor bolt and rebar would need to be designed.

If you encase the ends of the beams in the end foundation, you will have integral foundation and just need rebar.
The integral foundation can have soil placed against it for smooth transition from ground to dock"

Uh, isn't this what I first asked a question on. Really not much clarity there. What were my confusing terms?
