Alan, I think it mostly depends on the doctor doing the job, or maybe the time. I had one more than 20 years ago. The doctor said he'd do it in the "day surgery" section of the hospital. He said I wouldn't be completely put to sleep, but so sleepy that he'd had patients ask when he was going to start when he was already through, and it wouldn't take but a few minutes and I'd go home. So that early morning arrived, they gave me a shot that did make me terribly drowsy and he started. But it hurt and I was having a hard time holding still. I heard him tell the nurse to give me another shot. Well, I was barely awake, but still just could not hold still because it hurt. So they gave me another shot, and I woke up that evening upstairs in a room and found I had been admitted for an overnight stay. The doctor later told me he had a hard time because I was having colon spasms for reasons unknown.

So about 3 years ago, my family doctor thought I needed another one and sent me to a specialist; a cocky, confident sucker (and maybe he has a right to be). I told him what happened before, and he just said, "Ain't gonna happen and we're not even going to be in the hospital, just a surgical clinic." Now those folks didn't piddle around. That morning, one nurse was taking vital signs while another put an IV in the back of my hand, they whisked me into the operating room, the doctor walked in while the nurse was injecting something into the IV. She finished that syringe without me feeling anything, asked how I felt as she started a second syringe, and I said, "Just fine" and the next thing I knew I was awake in the recovery room, not even drowsy, with a nurse asking if I'd like something to drink, and the doctor had already shown photos to my wife and told her all about it. Quick, easy, and pain free.

I've had two. My Doc said at 53 I was 3 years overdue. I just had my second at 59. No problems either time with the procedure. It went just like Bird described. However the second time I took pills to prep rather than the gallon of golightly. After the procedure I could not keep anything down at all, not even water. It took a few doses of the drug they use for acid reflux to turn off the heaves.

It's nice to have insurance or a health plan which I don't have. I know I should have one now but the doctor said it would be about $3000.00.

The important thing is that you need to have it done. Colon cancer is curable if caught in time. It is one of the most preventable cancers. I have a friend that is a retired surgeon. He said that one of the leading causes of colon cancer is to people that don't have a bowel movement when they feel the urge. They hold on for whatever reason, and that irritated the bowel.
I have had a few in the past few years, and I can say that they are not bad at all. The worse part is the prep to clean out the intestine. I figured out a foolproof way to make getting the cleansing products down with the minimum of discomfort. I also checked with the doctors and they have all said that it is OK with them. Mine are done every other year. After you drink the glass of Golightly, take a spoon full of honey and place it in your mouth. The honey will kill all the salty taste of the Golightly and it is absorbed through the mucus membrane of the mouth, not the stomach. One final thought, tell the doctor beforehand that you don't want to have any recollection of the procedure. They can and will knock you out completely if you ask. My first one, I remembered everything. I told the doctor this and she didn't believe me. I told her that when she told the nurse that she was finished, I said to her.. "How are my tonsils".... She heard that, but thought that I was talking in my sleep. I also had taped a note to my rear end that said, "I am watching everything." Taped to that note was a eye from a teddy bear. When I got the note back after the procedure, written on the bottom was... "What did you see?" If you approach this with an open mind and don't get upset or tense, it will go quickly and easily. Just remember... You are not the first person to have this done, and you won't be the last. Nothing to be embarrassed about, because we all have the same parts and they have see all shapes before.. :D :D

Back to subject. Can,t see or hear so good anymore and one med-thyroid. Other than that I can beat anyone-IMO.
Finished 1900 foot shell home by myself in 2.5 yrs. Plumbing, elec, a'cond, security, sheet rock, flooring tile & pine, fire place etc. Did not tape & float or paint. added three decks, 12x24 work shop, 24x24 tractor barn, and cleared five acres. Presently building outdoor kitchen, adding two car parking and flooring tractor barn with washout concrete. Above took four years and I still work full time. My biggest limitation is hours in the day-not physical or mental ability.
Will be 68 in May.
Thanks to TBN friends my project list is so long that I don't have time to get old.

HAVE A STRESS TEST or at least get Dr. advice men always think they are invincible. Do not take better care of your tractor than yourself.
