Alan, I think it mostly depends on the doctor doing the job, or maybe the time. I had one more than 20 years ago. The doctor said he'd do it in the "day surgery" section of the hospital. He said I wouldn't be completely put to sleep, but so sleepy that he'd had patients ask when he was going to start when he was already through, and it wouldn't take but a few minutes and I'd go home. So that early morning arrived, they gave me a shot that did make me terribly drowsy and he started. But it hurt and I was having a hard time holding still. I heard him tell the nurse to give me another shot. Well, I was barely awake, but still just could not hold still because it hurt. So they gave me another shot, and I woke up that evening upstairs in a room and found I had been admitted for an overnight stay. The doctor later told me he had a hard time because I was having colon spasms for reasons unknown.
So about 3 years ago, my family doctor thought I needed another one and sent me to a specialist; a cocky, confident sucker (and maybe he has a right to be). I told him what happened before, and he just said, "Ain't gonna happen and we're not even going to be in the hospital, just a surgical clinic." Now those folks didn't piddle around. That morning, one nurse was taking vital signs while another put an IV in the back of my hand, they whisked me into the operating room, the doctor walked in while the nurse was injecting something into the IV. She finished that syringe without me feeling anything, asked how I felt as she started a second syringe, and I said, "Just fine" and the next thing I knew I was awake in the recovery room, not even drowsy, with a nurse asking if I'd like something to drink, and the doctor had already shown photos to my wife and told her all about it. Quick, easy, and pain free.
