How Long Do Oil Filters Last??

Just picked up a case (12 filters) of BX oil filters for $53 including shipping off e-bay. I figure if I change the oil once a year, they will last me well 12 years. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Do you think the paper filter will degrade over time, if so, how long would it be safe to use the filters for??

I'd worry more about the rubber gaskets than the paper.
If you keep them away from any uv light, and dust free, they should last you at least 12 years.

well as long as they are kept dry and out of sunlight i would think they would last that long, i suppose if ya were worried ya could change your oil twice a year! but realy i dont think i would be concerned, if the gasket goes bad you can tell easily, and its unlikely anything would happen to the paper unless if got damp. i have had filters that sat around for probably 7 or 8 years, maybe longer judging from some of the labels and boxes, and have used them and never worried nor had a problem

Keep them sealed so bugs can't make nests in them. Reading on one of the diesel truck sites where bug nests/debris got into the small oil passages in a diesel engine and caused some failure.

Occasionally I buy a couple filters at a time.. i.e. sale.. etc. I keep my filters in original packaging, and in a ziplock freezer bag.. burp all the air I can.. then take a page of newspaper and wrap them and tape up.. record date and filter number/application on the outside and store in garage. I'vd done that for 5yrs now with my ford filters.. filters always smell new when i open them up..
