The higher C/R should compression ignite more readily. The turbo only helps when its spinning. Both those ratios seem a bit low tho. 16.5 probably wouldnt be enuf to ignite. Im guessing 19/18 resp

Larry, your post made me curious. I just checked my service manual and the TN55,65 is 17.5 where as the TN75 (turbo) is 16.5.
Andn my comment about the lower compresion ratio being easier to start had to do with it being easier to spin with the starter, not the C/R firing off the diesel fuel once it is spinning.

Understood re easier spin with the lower CR. As to the 16.5 producing enuf heat to ignite the fuel - I just didnt think it would. Obviously Im wrong. My Mahindra turbo has 18.4 and no glo plugs. It starts instantly down to about 45F without using the intake heater. You are lucky to get it started at 20 w/o the heater. I can see that glo plugs as you have would be more effective than intake heat with lower compression since they heat the combustion chamber directly, and dont pre-expand the incoming air.
I wonder how low compression can be and still be able to start a cool engine.

Actually Larry, another point. The TN's don't have glow plugs. They have what New Holland calls Thermo Start Assist. What it does is warm up the fuel. It is item 6 in the attached diagram.

The best cold weather assist I have found is synthetic oil. Turns over very easily when cold, I do not have to worry about lube problems. I start it up and place idle around 1000 RPM for about 1 minute. I operate FEL through some "cycles" and begin working it lightly for first 5 minutes; after that; use it normally.

I misread and thot you had said you had both. Anyway, arent those low pressure hoses in the diagram? I would think the heat would have to be applied right at the injector. Otherwise the fuel would cool off.

Actually I'm no longer sure what it does. On one hand it look like it sticks into what I think is the manifold. One the other hand it appears to be connected to low pressure fuel lines. Maybe RickB knows?

I may just have to take my off and look at it.

Could the thermal assist be a flame heater? My deuce has one that burns diesel in the manifold. Requires an electrical connection to fire off the fuel.

That makes sense and fits the picture. It is scary to consider intaking a small lean ignited charge, then compressing it and injecting the main charge. With Andys experience it obviously works very well. It will be interesting to find out more about the method of function.

I read in most all of the loader manuals and in mine to run at or under 1200 rpm till the hydralic oil reaches 30 deg . That is what i try to do most of the time .

Ether does not work well with the open flame starting system.
