I just bought a piece of property (12 acre horse farm), and have been doing research on what typre of tractor to buy. The man who delivers hay for us offered to help out finding a tractor and located a Kubota 2950 with 5' bush-hog and FEL. The guy wants $11,200 for it, and the hay man says it is in good operational shape. It has 1400 hours on it, which seems like a lot to me, but I am new to this game. Is the tractor overpriced with that many hours? Thanks.

When I was looking for my current tractor I was told that Kubota engines were good for 8000 to 10000 hours. The hour meter on the one I bought was broken at 4500 hours. I guessed that it could have as much as 6000 hours on it. I figured that I would use it about 100 hours a year so I should get at least 20 years out of it - i.e. it will outlast me. Well 5 years and 500 hours later it is still going strong. The only thing I have done is replace the alternator. So 1400 hours isn't very much if the machine has been properly maintained. I looked at a listing of prices for used Kubotas but couldn't find a listing for a B2950 - the closest listing I could find was a 2001 Kubota B2910 and it listed at $14K without attachments.

The L2950 was made in the early '90s I think. Three cylinders, around 30 pto hp. These were nice rugged tractors - many had GST (glide-shift). 1400 hours usually means worn tires and maybe faded paint but mechanically it should be just fine. $11k sounds reasonable - especially if it looks decent. It's always a little nicer if it isn't wearing new paint. If the tractor is/was used commercially be extra cautious. I always suggest checking the two air filter elements in the cannister. It's ok if the larger element is dirty - but it's not ok if it is damaged or missing. The inner smaller element should look clean. Best of luck.
