Had a friend have his service truck in a tire shop to get a muffler changed. He left it and they didnt want to do the job on the ground they put it on a 2 post hoist. they bypassed the safety on the lift picked the truck up while he was gone. Hoist broke on one side dropped new truck welder plasma and other tools wrecked plasma and welder and the compressor and a 25k ervice bed

Saw this happen with a lift failure in a dealer I once worked in...It can happen, and it does. Not always the tech's fault..sometimes, but not always.

I was home sick a few weeks ago and there was the same exact thing on the People Court. Some guy had a PIMPED out Expedition at a mechanics getting new U joint put in. They dropped it off the lift and it fell on its side. The only way to get it out was for a wrecker to pull it out on its side into the parking lot then pull it back up on its wheels.

It did something like $10,000 damage but the issue was the Expedition was a 2002 or so with something like 180,000 miles so the book value was way below that. The guy with the Pimped out truck was smart and recorded the mess with his IPhone and took tons of pics and then did some research when he got home. Long and short of it was the shops lift was a 7K unit and the truck weighed that plus. He got $5000, his states max in small claims court.

Thats what got my friends service truck fixed. His truck was almost totalled Plu downtime from his pipeline job. They had to drage this truck out side ways with a backhoe and wrecker. He said he found about 30 dollars in change on the drivers side door that was jarred out .

It happens, not a lot but occasionally.
I have seen 2 almost's; both were ford trucks. Fords have a stepped up frame that can be a ***** to lift from. a Chevy suburban is much easier to lift than a Ford Truck. this shop has old lifts that work, but are not as safe; the lift arms don't lock into place when lifting.
First one was on a 4 corner rack drive on rack and a cable broke. it nosed down to the left front corner. it hung on and we stabilized the hoist until a repair crew got out and safely got the truck down. no damage.
the second one was a in ground lift, and the tech tried to use a block of wood to level the rear part to the frame; the left rear block of wood kicked out and the lift arm spit out to the side. It was balanced on the left ft and right rear, tilting to the left rear. I ran up to it and held it steady as another tech slowly lowered it to the ground.
other than that a few door crunches, one car thru the display window... nothing exciting.

Id hate to be under it when it ''shifts''I was wondering peoples thoughts as to if something like this would be good as an extra safety one while under it.
Jack Stand - Tall- Heavy Duty Lift
I always lift and then bend down and see that all four pads are where they should be.
Just wonder if Id feel better if I had a little something extra under it while under there working..

I think the safest is driving over a pit with the small entry door and removable grate. I think they have them at wal mart. Walmart dropped my 03 F150 XL reg cab off the lift. Thought I was getting a good deal on tires. Instead, ended up with a dented door. They paid to fix it and discounted the tires.
