How many of you are Diabetics?

Hang in there Terry, you'll get it under control. My numbers took about 3 months to level out. My doctor even told me if I maintain my numbers it's all right to "cheat" once in a while and have some birthday cake or a jr blizzard at DQ.

Toughest part for me was switching to diet pop /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif although Coke Zero isn't too bad.

Enjoy your weekend.

Yes, hang in there Terry43 and don't give up. Control is possible, you just have to get the right combinations of food intake to exercise and medications. I believe exercise and then weight control are probably the two most important things to think about.

My wife has gestational diabetes, that is, diabetes when pregnant. Last pregnancy she tried an herbal supplement, Metaphase. Worked WONDERS! Took a few days, but dropped her blood sugars from the 180s -190s down to the 100s -110s.

Don't knwo where to get it, but I imagine you can find it online. It's worth looking into. Insulin & some of the other stuff has some side effects that would be better avoided, if possible.

I've heard rumors that in some states they are considering preventing all DB's from driving any CDL required vehichle. I travel all over the country (though by air and car not truck) but I hope it stays just that rumor. I think as long a you are stable and can prove it with regular testing and checkups we shouldn't be held againts you.

The fellow that start up Dlife on CNBC(?) was saying he had goten his non-comercial pilot lisince.... and has to prove good control and keep is checkups up to date...

I believe here in AL you can be DB and be a Police Officer. So I can't see how they could hold a CDL or tractoring againts against you if that's true.... I mean come on if you can drive Police car and carry a gun...

Over all I would think it be by state... ???

Frustrating at time ant it? When I found out a lil over a yr ago March 05...
I was given a choice by my general when I went back for a follow up on a nasty sinus infection. Apparently I looked dang near dead... and he notice the 32oz power aid... So he checked my sugar and said " you are going onto shock or a diabetic comma!!!" His labs metter simple said Hi!... I found out later it only went to 600mg..

I found out later (in the EM room) it was 1350... and a A1C of 14.7....
4days later it was down to 389mg so they showed me how to use a needle and sent me home with the how to's of insulin...

Now I'm of the shots and still on Metformin 500mg 2daily... and average 4.7 - 5.5 on A1C and 98 - 128 if I eat right, which I blow once and a while to treat my self on occasion...

So I know you can do it mon...

I aslo frequent a DB forum you may or may not know about... I'm pbmax there also....

good luck and good numbers to ya and everone here...

Here is a new product that i am gonna try. My herbalist i go to says she has heard good things about this product and she is gonna order some next week. I'm going to try it myself because i have trouble keeping my type 2 under control and since my divorce it seems i am way out of control now. Anyway my herbalist knows of two customers she has that got the product and their sugar levels are normal now. She called the company to get set up as a distributar and they claim it cures not just gets diabetes under control. I find that hard to believe but right now i am willing to try anything. This is not spam and i am not selling this stuff. I'm just putting the info out there for you to see it.

I have no idea what the current physical requirements are, and not even sure about back in the dark ages when I started, but I doubt a diabetic could have gotten hired back then. However, if an officer became a diabetic later, that would not have required him/her to lose the job.

Over 30 years ago, when I was a lieutenant, one of the older sergeants fainted and fell out of his chair at the station one night. An ambulance was called, he was sent to the hospital, and learned (much to his surprise) that he was diabetic. They did get it under control pretty quickly, but because he answered honestly to the question "Have you ever fainted or passed out?" the next time he went to renew his drivers license, they revoked his license. It took several months of doctors' reports and finally a lawyer to get his drivers license back. In the meantime, his wife drove him to and from work, and he worked as the station sergeant.

howdy Bird, Yep I was actually suprised when I heard it and since I can't recall exaclty were I heard it or read it. I posted it as a "believe" hoping some like your self whom has served would be able to say... But I can see why not especially back then when they did not have a handy dandy meter to tell you what your current sugar level is in 5sec....

I can see it now in the news... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Suspect gets aways a Diebetic Officer has to stop chasing check there BS and eat a snack and wait 15min for there BS (blood sugar) to go up... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif due to light headed and dizzy feeling.../forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On the DB site we were tossing a round the subject of jobs here... some jobs were not allowed to do a while back...

This qoute is the top of the page and many of use found it interesting..
"As an insulin user, the following jobs (under current legislation) are unavailable to you. This list does not cover every position, and an employer may use their own discretion, in some cases unfairly. Some of these jobs are exempt from the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, meaning that employers can refuse an applicant who has diabetes.

Driving HGVs, buses and taxis
Armed forces
Fire service
Ambulance service
Prison service
Airline pilots and Airline Cabin crew
Air traffic control
Offshore work"

Notice they didn't mention Police...
If memorry serves it was on the local news here one night they were talking to and officer who is DB.... I would still think it was by state... if at all really an option...

Here for those that are interested is a link to the ADA site about discrimination and such...
