Kicking this back up rather than starting a new thread.

So how many of you are using a glucose meter? Input on specific models? Anyone know of some device that makes the stick more "automatic" for someone who has a difficult time intentionally driving a sharp instrument into his body?

Wayne,
There are a lot of spring loaded "pens" available. Since I was not told to check myself regularly.....yet, I decided to just to do it any way. I just use the lancets and "grin and bear it". The pens cost as low as $15 at the drug store.

LMTC,
I use an "Accu-Check advantage" and the comfort curve test strips. The pen pricker device came with the glucometer,
it is called an "Accu-Check SoftClix". It uses a very thin needle and is adjustable for depth from 0.5 to 5.5. I don't know what unit of measure it uses but I have it set on 1.5 because my fingers have been stuck 6 or 8 times a day for nearly 25 years that glucometers have been available.
I use the Accu-check because they are the most reliable metersI have found. They work when cold (around -5) and when they are hot (around 110), without problems. If you need anything else don't hesitate to ask.

I have type II and take Metformin and Actos. There are no restictions on my CDL. I haul a Sulfuric Acid Tanker and have had no problems. I am also MSHA and OSHA certified. When I get my Physical every 2 years, the Doctor will test my glucose level and write the results on my Long Form.

Wayne,

I am still using my old One Touch Profile. I have two of them, they work fine. No reason to change!

Most meters come with a spring loaded pen for the Lancet. After a while it will become second nature. I have been doing it for so long I don't even think twice. I don't even clean off my fingers unless they are really dirty.. Excess blood? Just stick my finger in my mouth... good as new. They say, “do not reuse the lancet”... I change mine ever March ... no kidding.

Find a meter that meets your needs as far as logging and size. Also consider a brand you can easily purchase test strips for.

I know it may seem difficult right now, but it does get easier... Hang in there. ;)

Hi!

I'm a non-diabetic who is married to a type 1 - since 6 years old.

I just want to say - really work on keeping those numbers "normal" My wife has very little in the way of "complications" after almost 50 years of having diabetes. If the meters had been available 50 years ago she would be even more perfect than she is anyway! My love for her is unaltered by this "problem".

It's a shame that people have to have diabetes, but it's becoming so common as to be next to "normal" these days. Diabetes makes one assume the responsibility for diet and activities that we all should have accepted anyway!

Keep the faith!

I use a FreeStyle Flash. Everything fits in a pouch the size of a cigarette pack.
It only needs a drop of blood the size of a pinhead so you can test on your arm or leg if desired. Our Blue Cross insurance won't pay for the test strips so I buy them myself. They cost about $55.00 for one hundred strips.
