Yep moss,I'm all them oids,,too many knocks on the head along with all them chemicals I guess,I even got hemroids. And thanks for agreeing with me that like yourself a person can safely use a gen without one of those transfer switches.
Now,about the man who wired his large gen directly to power lines,,,my thoughts on this is maybe they do need electric cops after all,,what a moroon, him moss,,not you,,[wanted to get that clear],I'm having fun on here, don't wanta get kicked off again right yet,,,,[I'd put a couple of those smily faces here, but don't know how],,so,,smile,,smiley,,,thingy

Mine is a Coleman 6500 Watt /7500 watt surge. It has a 10HP Kohler Command Pro Engine.
I paid $499.99 + tax about 6 years ago. at Home Depot.
We have used it numerous times. Once for 6 days, stopping it only to fill with fuel. Runs about 9 hours on a little over 4 gallons of gas.
It runs: Well pump,Pressure tank, Oven, Microwave, stove top, 2 refrigerators, blower on wood burning stove, lights in kitchen, living room 1 bedroom and 2 bathrooms.
Our hot water heater is tankless and needs too much juice for the generator. So we have to heat water to take baths when the power is out.

I just bought one from TSC and used it for the last few days. It's an 5.5k 10hp Briggs and Stratton PowerBoss. Yes I hooked it to my meter base, Yes the main was off. Seem to average 1/2 gal an hour of fuel usage and has a seven gallon tank. My problem was I only had two 2 gallon cans. Finally was able to buy a 5 Gallon can, but now I'm back on the grid.:)

Your meter base has a main? Odd...

All the power around here comes from the power company, into the meter base, out of the meter base, then into the service disconnect, then into any sub-panels. Our main breaker panel is considered a sub-panel since we have a service disconnect between it and the meter. If your main breaker pannel is within 10 feet of the meter base, you are allowed to skip the main disconnect as they will consider the main breakers in the first panel the service disconnect.

Coleman 5500/6850 watt.

Powers:
Furnace (Hot water baseboard)
Well Pump
TV/Stereo/computer
Freezer/Fridge/Dish washer/washer.
Several sets of lights on two floors.
A few outlets in kitchen for coffee maker etc.

We have a propane stove/range. We also mainly heat with wood.

The unit was installed by an electrician with a cross over switch/box.

Lloyd

PS: Installed 2 years ago and used 1/2 dozen times. Tank will run for about 11 hours before refill. It is not hard wired. I also use it around the property to power different electrical tools. Unit plus installation was about $1300.00.

There is certainly nothing better than hearing that generator kick on and those lights come back on after the power kicked off on a poultry farm.

I just bought and installed a new Onan 150KW Cummins diesel unit with automatic transfer switch. I also have a miller 225 welder/generator that I used a lot this summer to run power tools.

Billy that looks like a very nice setup you have there.

You got that right, Eric! Most people are worried about losing power to their house. I used to enjoy a good thunderstorm (call me strange, it's OK) but now it can get way to costly.

Sorry to hear about your electrical contracting prob. I never posted cause I really didn't know what to suggest. The total cost he laid on you was mind boggling. Hope you get it straightened out.
