You spent $500 on a vehicle and only got 451,000 miles out of it? :confused3:

I will never do that again. The third year I owned it a pecan limb fell across the cab and I had the body shop fix it and paid extra for a complete paint job. The exterior was flawless

I'm pricing ton trucks more or less nationwide, either with a dump body or priced low enough so that I can add one on. It's unbelievable what some places are asking for vehicles with what I consider high miles. Some of them- such as the F350 with 355K miles for $9995- has to be a "buy here pay here" place, so that they can get the high prices from people who can't afford them anywhere else.

I am working on it. 248,000 on my 2004 Ford Excursion 5.4 gas. It runs great. It has started needing a coil pack here or there and leaks some oil here or there, but tows great and compact cars fear it on the interstate. Bruce

How do you like the 5.4? I'm kicking tires on a bigger Ford but have been unsure of that engine.

I was talking to a mail delivery lady today who said her RH drive Jeep had over 300K when she just traded it in for a Subaru. She couldn't say how many sets of brakes she replaced though. It seems like mail and newspaper delivery must be one of the hardest things on a vehicle.

My dad has one. Other than the know problem of them spitting plugs it’s been pretty good motor. My buddy had a Ford 6.8 and it was a real turd. He spent 12k working on that truck in 2 years. Honestly I don’t like the ford trucks. They turn and ride like crap and due to the motor being mounted under the firewall they’re nearly impossible to work on. My Chevy dually turns and rides better than my dads SRW ton Ford and I have a lot more springs than he does so that comparison wasn’t even in my favor. And his truck is 10 years newer.

I started out looking for something like yours but really don't have enough uses to justify it, so I've started looking at heavy 3/4 tons. One drawback is that I don't want an automatic transmission, which pretty much rules out Chevy trucks made in the last 20 years.

Jstpssng,

In response to; "How do you like the 5.4? I'm kicking tires on a bigger Ford but have been unsure of that engine.", it has been very reliable. I am diligent about fluids, filters and PM generally. It gets 13 mpg no matter what in the Excursion. Lower, maybe 10 if towing depending on load. My big trailer is 14M, 24' x 8.5', 7' tall enclosed. I don't think I ever had near capacity weight in it, but I have had it pretty full and she tows nice. Unless you are towing something really big, like over 12,000, you will be ok with the 5.4. A good friend has an F250 supercab with a 5.4 and about 210,000 and he occasionally tows a pretty big bobcat with it, which is probably near the practical limit Hope that helps.

Bruce

Thank you. The plug problem which another poster mentioned is my biggest concern. You cite two engines though which are going strong with well over 200K miles and it sounds like they both have earned their keep.

Keep in mind starting the 2009 F-150 model year (09/2008?) the 5.4L got new heads that was to have fully addressed the spark plug issue. We got our 2010 F-150 Lariat last year showing 205K miles and 212K currently. It is a good sounding engine with good power. It has the 3.73 limited slip differential and specs at 11.2K towing max. We bought it in the rough for $7400 but I think we are going to be OK if we do not have to spend more money on it. Drive train seems fine so far. These trucks sell for way to much money. The Ford dealership has a 2010 Super cab with I think 160K miles with a more basic trim package for $13.5K.
