How many people wax their rims?

Before the birth of my son about 3.5 years ago I kept stuff absolutely mint, I would have pulled each bolt out of the tires on my B3030 and waxed up the bearing surfaces to be sure rust would not form between the bolt and rim, and you know what, I would lose sleep at night thinking about rust forming there.

Now with a 3 yo and a 9 month old I have really changed considerably. A good example is this past weekend, I was on my quad with my 3 year old poking around next to the house. We have a bunch of dead fall cedar trees, well, one came in like a spear between the front tire and poked through the fender guard THROUGH the belt guard and lodged itself into the belt drive.

Whoa . . I said, that looks pretty bad, I backed off this thing, took a screw driver to the belt guard to pry it out because it was catching the belt, put some painters tape over the hole and off we went. Believe me, a sea change in my attitude. It doesn't mean that I beat my stuff but it means it gets good, reasonable maintenance and my OCD is more in check.

With that said, maybe I will take the time this weekend to wax my rims before the snow starts.

Well, considering I wax my truck and it loses 12-15% value every year, I don't feel bad about putting some on my Bota once a year. It is still worth about what I paid for it. Oh yeah, while I have the wax out, I do the '81 JD 316 lawn tractor too and occasionally the hood on the '53 Oliver also. Helps when you want to hose them off and I don't mind them looking decent while I work them hard.
If more of the folks that wax don't step up and vote here, we may be in for four years of no waxing. LOL

Amen to that. Priorities change. I used to keep my trucks spotless. Get kids, house, mortgage, busy job, etc and all that goes out the window. Probably start back up again when I retire (which, if congress decides to 'manage' (aka steal) my 401k...will be much further away than ever.)

Radartech, I have an L4400, but it should be the same for any of the L's. There are several rim-to-wheel combinations, as well as which side of the wheel you bolt to the axle that affects overall tire width. You have to look at them to understand it (or my owner's manual has a very useful diagram). But, it is actually quite simple and easy to change.

I did when I first got them, they were off, sitting there and easy, haven't since but once a year or so I take a long handled RV washing brush and pour some carwash that has wax in it and hit it with that. I live in Florida where much of the dirt is sand so it comes off easy enough, if there is wax on it a hose will make it look like new after getting dirty. I waxed the hood once also and will again (some day) because the Florida sun attacks red and orange and makes it pretty ugly in no time, wax helps keep that nice orange from looking ugly. I also maintain about a half mile limestone road I live on, that can create rust and washing it off is easier if there is wax on the wheels, wish I had the motivation to do that. Mine sits in my new garage with shiny clean floors where if it looked worse than the floors it would look bad and since I have to look at it I keep it relatively clean, if it were a work only machine it would never even see a hose. Wax can make a machine look worse if working around brush because it makes it look like scratches in the paint when it's only in the wax. I would wax the wheels on my tractor before I would clean the aluminum wheels on my street vehicle any day, of course I've not done either in 3 years.

We're bringing our third home tomorrow after 10 days in the NICU. :) Watching that little guy struggle was just one more reminder of how fragile life can be, and how quick it can all be over. Waxing my truck or tractor has been placed way down on the list. However, after three kids I could just be getting lazy. :D

Life's short - if waxing your rims makes you happy then wax away.

A true-er truth is seldom spoken.

Mine are 5 and almost 4 and some of the things that were "important" to me before their birth still hasn't made the radar to even CONSIDER taking my time away from the kids.

Except for the fact that loaded they weight some where close to 600#s and when you take the off the want to tip over :eek:

Interesting, the remarks about kids changing things. I used to like things that shine but now I realize that the car wax that I have is a year or two younger that my eldest. It came in a prize package at a golf tournament. Most washing and waxing in the last 20 years has been done at the car wash. Now that the kids are out of the house maybe I'll use that stuff up.

I wax my tractors about once a year. It helps when I blow the dust off with a shop vac blower or air hose.

I think next time I may not buff the wax off of the rims. Or I may even spray them with silicone spray.

I even waxed my Bush Hog once. When I blew the dust of it, it came off slick as can be. I noticed a few little places I missed the dust didn't fly off as easily.

I actually *bought* a can of wax intending to at least wax the hood of mine, but haven't got around to using it yet, now 3 months later. I gotta wash it first, and that's a half-day job!
