Have you considered trying to have it welded before it breaks all the way?

I have. It would take some disassembly to do a proper cast iron weld with the pre and post heat recommended. It's on an outside radius portion of the casting, don't know if that makes a difference. Not sure if it could be done without removing the bellhousing completely. If the bellhousing has to come off the tractor to weld it, then it seems like a new one is the much better choice.

I read the failed welding attempt posts and have researched cast welding on-line to try and decide if that is a viable solution. Not being a welder, I don't have my own opinion. From what I have read, successful cast iron welding is not a given even when following all the recommended procedures.

I should get an eyeball opinion from a prof. welder.

Sorry to here about the crack. I've known some people that acted like they t smoked crack, but have never seen a cracked bell housing on a tractor. Must be a dismal sight.
I would think that if you had it welded you would always worry about it. The price difference may not be worth the added aggravation.

I have to agree with you that if you have to split the tractor and pull the bellhousing, you might as well just replace it. No sense paying money for something which may or may not work. I'm not a welder either. I was just thinking maybe there was an easier cheaper way. Doesn't sound like it. Too bad.:(
