As another poster has said, all an HST is, is a hyd pump and motor. Typ the pump is varible displacement which controls speed and direction. There can be a varible displacement motor as well. I've had 3 GT's over the past 35 yrs and still have the first one, a 1970 model. Have never had a problem with the trans. The old 70 model has seen nothing but service with a tiller for past 15 yrs. Before then it was mowing and Tilling. No personal experience with tractors bigger than these Gt's with HST but have used one on several occasions.
