How many trouble free Hours on your HST ??

I think the bobcat is a little different than a tractor HST. Same thing goes for my Power Trac. It really doesn't have an HST tranny. It has hydraulic pumps that turn hydraulic motors. ....

As another poster has said, all an HST is, is a hyd pump and motor. Typ the pump is varible displacement which controls speed and direction. There can be a varible displacement motor as well. Personally haven't seen one other than reading about them.

I've had 3 GT's over the past 35 yrs and still have the first one, a 1970 model. Have never had a problem with the trans. The old 70 model has seen nothing but service with a tiller for past 15 yrs. Before then it was mowing and Tilling. No personal experience with tractors bigger than these Gt's with HST but have used one on several occasions.

All the hours on my hydrostatic transmissions (4 of them) have been trouble free, none has needed any repair. One is 13 years old and the hour meter is broken.

By analyzing numbers, we can get a good idea on exactly how reliable are the hydros as compared to gear trannys.

5-1/2 years, 1285 hours, no trouble yet.
This afternoon we uprooted maybe 200 1" to 4" dia trees with treegetter on fel.

We sure hope making this statement doesn't start any problems.

JD 755. ~1300 hours in 16 years. No problems major or minor. Hydro fluid and filter changed every 250 -300 hours.

Yep.. plungers on the 5spds. And they are strikingly easy to get to. I pulle dthe ones on my 850 and they look new/replaced. I need to repalce them on my 660. She doesn't pop out yet.. but they are worn enough that they will start probably in a few years.

Exactly correct! Except on the 5 speed the "ball" is actually a hollow cylinder with a hemisphere on one end and called a plunger. Ford, always with the better ideas..... Bought a full set of plungers and springs about 2 years ago. It was $50ish. I didn't think that was too bad, especially given the improvement in shift feel SNAP! right in gear. You've probably seen my multiple posts telling people not to freak out and split a tractor until after changing them out.


I do think that you are selling yourself short. If you can do a gear trans, you can more easily do an HST. From reading your posts, you have skills.


On the question to the JD dealer - looking back, I think I used the work "rebuild" in talking to him - but used the word "repair" typing it. That may have caused confusion. {Sorry!!} Looks like I'm guilty again....still?

JD only has 2 models in thier lawn and garden tractors that aren't hydro's, that should tell you something. I've seen many cut's with thousands of hours on them. most of the problems w/hydros are linkage related. They are very pricey to replace or rebuild. But so is a dual stage clutch that a newbe wipes out becouse they don't know how to use one.

lets see if excavator's w/hydro drive dozers an the like can chime in then you will see how long hydros will last when they are really work. just a thought.

Just over 970 in a little over 5 years. No problems whatsoever. Stories of hydro's failing early in life should be factually verified or else consigned to the "old wives tale" category.

Kubota G5200 early '90s?, garden tractor 14 hp. 2500 + hrs. Bought used 7 years ago. Changed fuild and filter once at purchase time and once last year.

No problems with tranny.
