How much can raccoons eat?

I had a similar problem with skunks. Plus they would manage to dump out the hanging waterer every night. They weren't eating quite that much of the feed though.
Electric fence. Haven't had predator problems since. If already fenced a single electric wire around the outside bottom of a pen seems to work well. And provides the option of using electric netting for temporary yard extensions as wanted.

Ever tried Predator Deterrent lights? I have heard others swear by them.

Same your money on those lights;tried them years ago.Working to restore my electric fence,that works pretty good for ground predators.Have it on a day/night sensor.

In my 40+ years out here - I've NEVER been able to come to terms with the raccoons. They will not accept the concept of moderation. To this day I've only dispatched two of them. But - I no longer burn my garbage, feed any animals outside nor have any type of fruit orchard or garden.

I find it totally useless to attempt to curb their activities. They are of a single mind and it's not about to be altered. In this case I've given way to Mother Natures animals.

they went for a hike or something and a raccoon came and ate 90% of a big birthday cake they left out.

I understand and can completely appreciate your response - Frankenkubota. For all you knew - the girls might have left the birthday cake out for the raccoons. And,,, determined 'coons can be a mean adversary.

Used to have a chicken coop that was line of sight from the bedroom. Had a motion sensor on the coop. It sounded at 2am. Lit off the .223 ranch rifle, he was DRT and an oven stuffer but ears rang till morning! Misses frowned on that tactic from then on !

My nephew had "a" raccoon killing his daughters 4H chickens. He trapped and dispatched 8 of them before it was over.

It may not be how much they can eat as - how many are there. A year or so ago - a trail cam picture showed 'coons at a feeding station. I could easily count 18 'coons in the one picture.

I'd like people to notice that it's daylight and there's nothing wrong with those raccoons. It's an old wives tale that a raccoon out in daylight is sick. It's most likely hungry.

All I can say is I hope what they are doing is really rewarding; to me it's just asking for trouble. My neighbors (before the divorce) used to put out corn for the deer. We had herds of deer, flocks of turkeys; geese and even Mallard ducks in their front yard...not to mention our yard, and helped themselves to our tomatoes, house plants, peas and other greenery from the flower beds.

We made the mistake of befriending a cute little bitty male raccoon when I was a kid. It played with us, the dog, everyone. It would sit on your lap. Look in your pockets. Let you pet it. Slit the screens on the windows and rummage through the kitchen. Wake you up in your bed sitting on you in the middle of the night. Tear holes in the roof once we shut the windows. Get super aggressive once it hit about 1 year old.... real cute. As long as you kept feeding it, it was docile. Once you stopped, it was aggressive. Downright mean. You'd try and get it out of the house and it would growl at you. Ended up getting a trap from the DNR and they relocated it to a state park. Felt bad about it, as it was our own doing. Don't befriend raccoons. You'll eventually regret it.

Only 16 states allow pet raccoons.

Indiana is one of them.

Missouri is not.
