How much Hp to power a 5ft. brush hog?

Well,we are bringing up several things that go along with using a 5 ft hog on 254,
That chain for top link,,good idea,,,now,if what ever hog you got, lets your rear float like using a chain, and lets you use solid top link, that is the way to go,,,but,,,most don't,,kingkutter being one,,,you got to play with it a little,,,you want it loose enough so rear don't come up except on sharpest hill tops and such,,but tight enough so you can still pick it up a little,,thats the way mine is,,can pick rear up over a foot,,and for me thats plenty,,,I wouldn't even need a three point hog really anyways,,just pull type,,I generally just leave mine down and pull it,even when not cutting,,but there is a couple dips that I raise it,,the pto drive line is something to consider,,but,,never been a problem with me,,and unless they are now making drivelines different lengths,,it won't be a problem for anybody else either,,,the only good that top link is in 99 percent of cases is to raise your hog up,,,thats it,,,so,,think about it.
Gears for 254 and hogging,[I'm talking about known ground and tall thick grass and weeds, not real brush],yeah,I use creeper one in low,,other one in high,,2 and 3rd gears,,works for very steep hills and for flat,,it is less noisy than the other combo,[creeper high, other one low],,but just a tad slower,,,
If he's got real steep hills, put it in4 wd,,will hold you back better as well as help you up,,2nd gear in my combo,,but if you're worried, use 1st,,I cut my flatter areas than change gears and mow hills.
throttle,,use maybe 3/4 or less,I don't have a tach on mine and go by ear,,thicker, more,,thin, less,no need using full or 3/4 throttle even to cut 1 ft thin grass and weeds.
Now,if he's cutting real brush,,,can't add nothing,,cut very little brush,,,cut it off with chainsaw first, and drag big stuff off,[better cut them stubs low though],than go over it,when I do,,
He did say 254 jinma right?,,those with bigger kamas,,are the ones it seems to me who might be trying to hi jack thread?? like greg said,,his karma was bigger badder and uses a 6 ft hog,,,,other than say he don't like jimas, what could be added? thingy

mr fixit,,what do you think??thingy

Hmmm... OK Thingy, you got me to reply.

I don't have a Brush mower or any PTO attachments.

My KAMA 354 has spent it's entire life pushing trees over and scooping em up with the grapple. Typical trees are a foot at the base. I lift Grapple to about 6' and drive slowly into the tree. As tree starts to bend over I let the 615 pound Grapple drop which knocks the tree down to the ground. Then I take a chain and pull tree back up from other direction. The tree comes out of ground, roots and all. I then use the grapple to haul em away. I can lift a pile of logs so heavy the rear wheels come off ground over the slightest bump, gotta keep the grapple low!

I surely wouldn't try this with your lawm mower.

Actually Thingy, "We" were talking about how much power is required for a Brush Mower.

You were talking about Jinmas.

I'm glad you are happy with your tractor and it's very encouraging to most of us that you have lots of hours on it with minimal problems.

I'm glad I read this thread to this point. I have considered buying a brush mower and was leaning towards a 5', but now with a tractor the size of mine I guess the smart thing to do would be to size down to a 4 footer.

my 2005 Jinma 224 runs a 5 footer in 14"-16" tall brush with no problems.

Tool man, thats exactly what YOU should do,,get a 4 ft for yours, its a 204,,,not a 254,,,,,,no fix it,,you are wrong again,,the guy who started this had a 254 jinma,,so,,whats your point? and,,how many hours you got on that super duper karma? must be less than greg or you'd say,,,if anybody has 500 hours on their karmas,,post about it,,otherwise,,,,,, thingy

As has been posted before, you could get the 5' hog and take a smaller swath, cut at 3-1/2' or 4' and you should be OK. Take a 5' swath when conditions allow.
