How much Hp to power a 5ft. brush hog?

Mine is a 354 but I drag a 3 gang brush hog total of 12 feet wide with no problem, but my 2 cents to this is, if you have a FEL and live anywhere near a road where someone can throw junk in the weeds run with the FEL about 4 inches off the ground so if there is junk in the weeds your fel hits it first and not the mower.

Thanks all.

There seems to be a little debate on the issue but most seem to think it will be okay.

It will be mainly flat where I am using it, possibly a little muddy if I wait too late in the fall, with grass and the odd tree shot or sapling, likely smaller in diameter than a thumb.

You ain't going to have any problems,,them kingkutters are good uns,,for the money anyways,,,,,think about this,,instead of solid top link,,using a length of heavy chain,,it allows mower to float better,,you gotta just play with it,,can still pick it up,,,hardest on tractor is heavy tall grass,,,but I cut grass, heavy tall orchord type grass, thats 4 ft tall or so in spring with my 254 and 5 ft hog,,just don't getta real good cut the first time when its that heavy,,,and get you a long airgun for your aircommpressor,,,and take out screen and blow out raditiator after every mowing session,,,,falls worst,,but you gotta blow rad out often or it will over heat,,ain't got nothing to do with size of brushog,,,,thingy

Then either 254 should do just fine with a five foot rotary cutter. From experience I can advise you mow in 2wd if the ground is soft, since 4wd has a tendency to tear up the sod on turns. Mud's a different matter, but I usually mow around that. If/when you can't avoid it, you should be prepared to use the differential lock - it works great in either 2wd or 4wd.

But I've never had much luck stretching a chain, or pushing one for that matter. Without sufficient length, it will pull the back end of the mower off the ground every time the tractor front tires get lower than the rears. But if it's too long, you then can't lift the front end.

KK rotary cutters come with a floating toplink bracket, and as such I strongly discourage replacing an adjustable toplink with a piece of chain. KK calls it a swivel kit (part #501027).

When a toplink is adjusted properly, the swivel kit permits the rear of the mower to stay on the ground, regardless of what the tractor wheels are doing. The accepted transport position is to tighten the toplink so the swivel bracket is horizontal. The accepted mowing position is to lengthen the toplink so the swivel bracket is vertical. When you're done mowing, tighten the toplink again, lift the mower, head back to the barn.

It's called hijacking Richard - when you interrupt other peoples' threads with unrelated questions. But if it will shut you up, I've got something over 200 hours on the KAMA. It's positively been everything that my previous Jinmas weren't. In fact I like it so well, I just bought it's little brother - a TS354 and Koyker 160 loader.

Now, let's give Joe back his rotary cutter discussion. Please.

Greg, nice to hear from you,,,200 hours,,well,,get about 350 more, and than you are qualified to say kamas are as good as jinmas,,not better, like you say now,,,,
And,you don't have a clue as far as the chain inplace of toplink on mower is not as good or works worse or is not safe,,not a clue, greg.
from, highjacker, thingy,,,course, time you get 560 hours on that karma,I'll have put 900 hours on this jinma,,,but at least you'll be able to say,,,??

This is an excellent source of information and assistance for people who own or may possibly own a Chinese Tractor.

We have some of the most experienced and knowledgable tractor people here to help others, totally free of charge. This is not the place to start scrapping with the ones who are offering valuable information.

If you need a place to scrap take your little thing elsewhere and scrap.

As has been said.. about 5hp per foot of mower is a good rule of thumb. If you are in heavy thick lush grass.. or thick woody and green sapplings and brush like multi flora rose.. it will take more hp.. so go slower / take smaller bites.. etc.

I run a KK 5' mower with an old ford 8n. In 3' grass I have to run WOT in 1st gear.. but she cuts and maintains pto speed. I think a modern diesel in the 25 hp range would do -at least- as good as my 55 year old tired gasser.

( terain will also be a determining factor.. etc.. )

Hello All:

Happy New Year.

I have been looking at either a Jinma or Foton 254 for purchase ( for awhile now!) and was wondering if they are large enough to run a 5 ft. brush hog off of the pto? It would be used mainly to trim out some hunting trails.

Thanks in advance.

Joe
