How important? I ALWAYS have a first aid kit in the car. So far, haven't needed it except for the occasional bandaid, but I'd sure not want to be without it.

I have a full first aide kit in the vehicle, and update it every couple of years, but in 10 years, just never needed it.

Always have a full-blown EMT kit in my rigs. Never needed it for myself but it has been my unfortunate experience to come across some terrible wrecks in remote places.

Started doing this many years ago after I came across a car wrapped (literally) around a tree; guy inside had a hellacious gash that was bleeding badly and all I had to put on the wound was a roll of toilet paper........

I carry bandaids, Ibuprofin, antibiotic cream, aspirin and Benedril. The first three are apt to be used for minor injuries, aspirin for a heart attack, and the last can be helpful if somebody is having an allergic reaction. I also carry a roll of gauze, tape, and a tourniquet.
I should carry some type of a splint but don't. Everything fits in a pouch so I can carry it in the woods with me. I do keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my truck, which has 70% alcohol.
In a life threatening emergency you aren't going to be worrying about infection; your main objective is to stop the bleeding and your sweatshirt or tee shirt will work if necessary. Contrary to what some say, one thing you DON'T want to use is a tampon. They're designed to absorb blood, you want to stop it so that it will clot.

Which reminds me, I also have a couple tubes of clotting powder and a clotting sponge.

Only important when you need it.... I have kits in both our boats (never needed), our ATV's (never needed), & our trucks (never needed).... Thank God on all those accounts. I also have kits in all 6 of my company vehicles & twice I have been grateful they were there. One occasion was an employee who didn't have any prior allergic reaction to bee's (so no reason to carry an epi pen) wound up having a reaction on a jobsite. Our kits have Liquid Benadryl Capsules in them & they were administer to him after a reaction. After they whole episode was over we were told if he had not had the Benadryl to slow down the reaction the outcome could have been much worse. I'm personally highly allergic to yellow jackets (or a$$holes with wings) but I have a prescribed Epi Pen & I know the dangers. I' glad we had the kits available & up to date in our trucks...

I carry a store bought first aid kit.

I’d only use it for me or my family.

I would never begin to treat someone else. First, I have no idea if I’d be helping or hurting. Second, the possible liability is significant.

Most states have good samaritan laws which limit your liability.

That's a poor excuse to not help somebody. You apparently never heard of the Good Samaritan law.

The Good Samaritan Act is a law which protects any volunteer giving aid to an injured person in an emergency situation. The Good Samaritan Law offers legal protection in the form of exemption from lawsuits and liability, acting as a safeguard to those who help another in a real emergency, life-or-death situation.
