A lot of folks around here call any place out in the country 'the farm'. It is generally understood that there is no Old MacDonald or red barn. I'm not sure how that got started but its been that way all my life. I'm guessing that most of these country places used to actually be farms, cotton most likely or, in more recent times tree farms.
I'm in the south so the term ranch isn't used much around here.
