How much is what?

A lot of folks around here call any place out in the country 'the farm'. It is generally understood that there is no Old MacDonald or red barn. I'm not sure how that got started but its been that way all my life. I'm guessing that most of these country places used to actually be farms, cotton most likely or, in more recent times tree farms.

I'm in the south so the term ranch isn't used much around here.

There are no "ranches" east of the Mississippi....only plantations or farms. :D

I think 'plantation' (a word with a lot of good and bad baggage) is probably the correct term for those of us with 'tree farms'.

Less than 100 acres is the house paddock.

When the front gate is in excess of 100 miles from the homestead then you a large farm.

I have 40 acres and it is called a "Life style" block.

I've always wanted to visit Australia, but I now realize it would be quite difficult since I evidently don't speak their language.

MossRoad: just curious.. Has the IRS questioned your need for a tractor for your 'Scalopus aquaticus' "harvest"?

I'm not so sure about a ranch but I know one day I'll be "buying the farm" and its just a little bitty piece of ground...
