I believe a flag is mandated as it tends to attract attention while waving about whereas a stationary object will not.

In Missouri a SMV is to be used only for its intended purposes and not for long lengths or to mark driveways.

This is what I'm looking for, I think (in addition to a flag or two):

You are not even allowed to have a slow moving sign visible on equipment you are floating. So if you have your tractor on a trailer, the sign must be covered or removed. Although I have only been stopped once for this in a decade.

How about fashoning a similar sign, but use Scotchlite tape on it. There are many different designs on said tape anymore... For night time, maybe a LED lightbar. And as for a reminder that it is back there, maybe a set of the lighted guide bars you see on front bumpers of semi's. They do make shorter ones for pickup's.

What about taking a piece of angle iron and mounting it on the back of the rig and putting a square piece of sheet metal covered in orange duct tape in the middle, and put a flag on each end of the angle iron.
