We have the small, compact Maytag front loader washer and dryer and if the amount of water used is in the manual, I sure haven't found it.

Full laods in a full size machine will go through 30 gallons per load.
Toilets are down to 1.4 gallons per flush these days, say 2. Old toilets were as high as 5 gpf.
Shower heads, regular ones, flow 2.5 gpm so a 20 minute shower uses 50 gallons.
When we size septic systems we assume 60 gallons per person per day which includes evrything done in a home.
You can buy low flow applicances and fixtures. Pressure also effects the water consumption of things like shower heads but the above uses rules of thumb.

Supposedly, when I was purchasing my Maytag front loader, the owner of the place said I was making a great decision on purchasing a front loader machine. I asked him why & he went on & on about the advantages....however, what stuck in my mind the most was the amount of water consumed per load. He said the machine I purchased would run perhaps 15 gallons of water per load as opposed to a top loader using around 45 gallons per load. Anyone doing a lot of wash and on a septic system should look further into the amount of water useage a front loader takes.

Yep, Jon, that's what we were told, too; use less water and less detergent, but I don't find anything in the manual about the amount of water used. And while I've repaired some GE, Hotpoint, Whirlpool, and Kenmore washers and dryers in years past, I know nothing about these new ones with all the digital displays and such. So this time I bought their extended warranty; something I don't normally do. A part of that warranty is that they will make a service call to perform "routine maintenance" once a year, so we have a service call scheduled for Wednesday. I'm wondering what "routine maintenance" is on a washer or dryer, other than keeping them clean and the dryer vent hose open.
